Gulden Draak, lonely at the top for 25 years, now gets company
The birthday present: Gulden Draak 9000 Quadruple, an enrichment of the Gulden Draak range.
An ode to the past and to the city of (9000) GHENT
The Gulden Draak is named after the gilded statue on top of the belltower of Ghent. Such eminent symbol, that has been standing firm for over 6 centuries, deserves equally grand beers. The unsurpassed Gulden Draak as dark tripel of 10,5% alcohol gets, after 25 years of growing success, quite an addition, the Gulden Draak 9000 Quadruple.
All features of the Gulden Draak
The extremely rich and complex taste sensation and the stable beer head can also be found in the Gulden Draak 9000 Quadruple. The sweet caramel touches, however, are still reserved for the Gulden Draak.
With addition of extra malt
The new recipe, on basis of 3 different kinds of malt added in a volume of 4 times the content in lager, provide the Gulden Draak 9000 Quadruple with a deep golden amber colour and a fruity scent. Together with the smooth and subtle sweet taste ensures this a wonderfully accomplished bouquet.
In line with the traditions of Brewery Van Steenberge
Just like the other specialty beers of Brewery Van Steenberge is the Gulden Draak 9000 Quadruple a beer of high fermentation with secondary fermentation. A wine yeast is used for the secondary fermentation, which also contributes to the grandiose taste.

4.1 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
From the 11.2 fl. oz. bottle with a simple marking of 01_M. Handsome looking medium amber-mahogany colored pour with a modest, lingering off-white head. Lots of nice aroma here including pear, apple, breaded malts, brown sugar, and a touch of spice. The body is medium to bold. The taste is a very sweet tasting Quad with the alcohol well integrated. Despite its sweeter character this is luscious.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
330ml bottle from Les Crepes de Sophie, Shrewsbury. This may have a lower score than the original Gulden Draak but I much prefer it. A much more drinkable sweet character with dusty sherbet, candy sugar and possibly a little coriander. Carbonation is perfect but despite a sweet drinkability that 10.5% does start to show it’s potency as you get about 3/4 of the way through. Excellent stuff.

Fine foamy stable head rich sweet deep malty aroma and incredibly rich flavor that is difficult to describe. Has a fizzy palate and reddish gold color. If you like draak, you will like the 9000.

On tap at Global Brew. Pours an orange color with a thin white head that stays. Sweet floral aroma. Taste is sweet pale malt, caramel, a bit of cloying rock candy and a minimal hop tone. Interesting.

3.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Dark amber body, offwhite head. Aroma has alcohol, malt, raisins and cookies. Flavour is bit alcoholic with yeast and raisins. Bit too much alcohol covers everything.

3.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Pours yellow-orange with large foamy white head. Fresh aroma of coriander, grass, flowers. Taste is spice, candy sugar, clove, banana. Slightly boozy. Full-bodied and highly carbonated. Fairly light taste for such an alcohol-heavy beer, would have preferred it at triple-strength. The original Gulden Draak remains a favourite. Still nice to see Van Steenberge expand the Gulden Draak brand.
