Gulden Draak, lonely at the top for 25 years, now gets company
The birthday present: Gulden Draak 9000 Quadruple, an enrichment of the Gulden Draak range.
An ode to the past and to the city of (9000) GHENT The Gulden Draak is named after the gilded statue on top of the belltower of Ghent. Such eminent symbol, that has been standing firm for over 6 centuries, deserves equally grand beers. The unsurpassed Gulden Draak as dark tripel of 10,5% alcohol gets, after 25 years of growing success, quite an addition, the Gulden Draak 9000 Quadruple.

All features of the Gulden Draak The extremely rich and complex taste sensation and the stable beer head can also be found in the Gulden Draak 9000 Quadruple. The sweet caramel touches, however, are still reserved for the Gulden Draak.

With addition of extra malt The new recipe, on basis of 3 different kinds of malt added in a volume of 4 times the content in lager, provide the Gulden Draak 9000 Quadruple with a deep golden amber colour and a fruity scent. Together with the smooth and subtle sweet taste ensures this a wonderfully accomplished bouquet.

In line with the traditions of Brewery Van Steenberge Just like the other specialty beers of Brewery Van Steenberge is the Gulden Draak 9000 Quadruple a beer of high fermentation with secondary fermentation. A wine yeast is used for the secondary fermentation, which also contributes to the grandiose taste.

Bottle served in Duvel snifter: Pours a coppery hue with an initial large frothy white head that does fade a bit, okay lace. The aroma has notes of banana, apricot, peach, dusty earthy esters, some alcohol and candi sugar, and caramlized biscuity malts. The taste is a touch sweet and fruity with a dollop of spicy notes on the finish. Unlike many Quads this does not have the character of Special B malts nor the overall depth. Seems more like an amped up Tripel with all the same yeastie notes. The mouth feel is smooth and moderately carbonated with some boozy warmth as well. Gotta admit I am a bit disappointed in this beer, was expecting something it failed to deliver upon.

330ml bottle. Rich carbonated amber, with a frothy pale gold head. Aromas of apple, raspberries, sweet granola, bread, and haylage. The flavour is similarly sweet and grainy, with honeyed bread and a touch of liquor burn on the aftertaste.

330ml bottle, best before 2017-07-10. Pour likely hazy and orange copper with a very frizzy white foam that leave my sight pretty fast. Aroma of caramel malt, brown sugar and yeast. Sugar, alcohol and tasty yeast share the stage for this wonderful quad. Medium to full body, oily and normal carbonation for the style. Nice long and enjoyable brown sugar finish.

33 cl bottle served in La Trappe chalice. Pours cloudy reddish amber with a large good-lacing non-lasting off-white head. Subtle and diverse aromas that increase with temperature: berries (redcurrant, cranberry, some cherry, some plum) and roses. Also chocolate, tobacco, butterscotch. Quite powerful in the mouth, high carb. Tasty, crisp, nice acidity, fantastic umami (pair it with shellfish and see how you like it), no bitterness. Not as long as other quadrupels, but very nice.

Wonderful beer. Rum, raisins, ripe cherries, caramel, burnt sugar. Sweet but not cloying it sticky. Finish lingers but clean.
