Gulden Draak, lonely at the top for 25 years, now gets company
The birthday present: Gulden Draak 9000 Quadruple, an enrichment of the Gulden Draak range.
An ode to the past and to the city of (9000) GHENT The Gulden Draak is named after the gilded statue on top of the belltower of Ghent. Such eminent symbol, that has been standing firm for over 6 centuries, deserves equally grand beers. The unsurpassed Gulden Draak as dark tripel of 10,5% alcohol gets, after 25 years of growing success, quite an addition, the Gulden Draak 9000 Quadruple.

All features of the Gulden Draak The extremely rich and complex taste sensation and the stable beer head can also be found in the Gulden Draak 9000 Quadruple. The sweet caramel touches, however, are still reserved for the Gulden Draak.

With addition of extra malt The new recipe, on basis of 3 different kinds of malt added in a volume of 4 times the content in lager, provide the Gulden Draak 9000 Quadruple with a deep golden amber colour and a fruity scent. Together with the smooth and subtle sweet taste ensures this a wonderfully accomplished bouquet.

In line with the traditions of Brewery Van Steenberge Just like the other specialty beers of Brewery Van Steenberge is the Gulden Draak 9000 Quadruple a beer of high fermentation with secondary fermentation. A wine yeast is used for the secondary fermentation, which also contributes to the grandiose taste.

Bottle fizzed over upon popping the top. Pours a slightly amber orange with thick white head the goes away relatively quickly. Aroma of wheat, toast, dried plums, raisins, a ton of spice, and tart fruits. Flavor matches well, but adds a herbal hops to the finish, and makes for a nice sipper.

A really nice and somewhat sweet Quadrupple. A proper winter beer that warms your belly like it should. it is a solid addition to the Gulden Draak line of beers

Bouteille 33cl, V&B Grenoble.

0.33l bottle from Lidl. Colour is light reddish or blutorange. Nice head, fairly persistent for a strong beer like this one. Aroma is moderate, chewing gum, fig, raisins. Later some other fruits show up. Foam tastes like tutty frutty chewing gum, raisins. Alcohol is strong. While it is very unbalanced, (i.e. very sweet), it somehow manages to be seductive and complex. Provides surprisingly silky mouthfeel. The beer itself is similarly unbalanced, sweet and full of alcohol. Yet it is complex and fruity. Moderate carbonation silky mouthfeel again. Sweet aftertaste. Obviously a "relative" of the Piraat brand (the same chewing gum taste is recognizable) but this one is somehow more harmonic, more sophisticated, more complex. This is probably an ideal dessert beer, I appreciate the complexity in the harmony, but will not be my favourite: way too sweet for me...

330ml bottle from a pack from Lidl. Dark muddy brown, with an off white head. Fruity, spicy aroma Quite straightforward dried fruit and cupboard spices flavour with a warming alcohol kick. Something a bit fungal, but not quite as complex as it aspires to be

Rich caramel and dark fruit aroma. Pours a cloudy dark orange/bronze colour with a large frothy head and good lacing. Sweet caramel and fruit flavour with notes of brown sugar. Thick creamy texture. Long sweet finish with some warming alcohol feel.

Aroma is banana, clove, spices, caramel, fruity, booze, eh. Appearance is is reddish brown, off white head, mostly clear. Taste is boozy, fruity, clove, dry, spices, woody, different. Mouthfeel is medium body, light very crisp carbonation, weird woody fruity aftertaste that falls off extra quickly. Overall, this one isn’t as balanced as I’d hoped.
