Gulden Draak, lonely at the top for 25 years, now gets company
The birthday present: Gulden Draak 9000 Quadruple, an enrichment of the Gulden Draak range.
An ode to the past and to the city of (9000) GHENT The Gulden Draak is named after the gilded statue on top of the belltower of Ghent. Such eminent symbol, that has been standing firm for over 6 centuries, deserves equally grand beers. The unsurpassed Gulden Draak as dark tripel of 10,5% alcohol gets, after 25 years of growing success, quite an addition, the Gulden Draak 9000 Quadruple.

All features of the Gulden Draak The extremely rich and complex taste sensation and the stable beer head can also be found in the Gulden Draak 9000 Quadruple. The sweet caramel touches, however, are still reserved for the Gulden Draak.

With addition of extra malt The new recipe, on basis of 3 different kinds of malt added in a volume of 4 times the content in lager, provide the Gulden Draak 9000 Quadruple with a deep golden amber colour and a fruity scent. Together with the smooth and subtle sweet taste ensures this a wonderfully accomplished bouquet.

In line with the traditions of Brewery Van Steenberge Just like the other specialty beers of Brewery Van Steenberge is the Gulden Draak 9000 Quadruple a beer of high fermentation with secondary fermentation. A wine yeast is used for the secondary fermentation, which also contributes to the grandiose taste.

Dark blonde, with dense white head. Aroma shows up yeast, alcohol, some malts and a sweetness like almonds or walnuts. Bitter taste, fizzling by the alcohol. Strong, full bodied, dry. A fair beer, but very hevay in the finish by the amounts of alcohol that dominates the beer.

A slightly orange, coppery beer with a medium and blond head. The aroma is quite strong and slightly booze, dried fruits, lots of spices, some green apples. Taste of riped and smooth fruits, strongly spicy, dry herbs, warming alcohol in the end but that is not bothering. Medium+ bodied, high and sparkling carbonation. Smoother with yeast. Overally, quite nice beer, riped fruits and spices, and not too heavy.

330 ml bottle. Practically clear copper golden body with a big, foamy off-white head. Aroma feels like sweet malt with hints of citric fruit and has some alcohol. Flavor is sweet and malty, slightly spicy, not much fruit and lots of warming alcohol. Fine body and sweet aftertaste with some alcohol as well. Decent, but a bit too sweet and alcoholic for my taste. Prefer the original as I like a lot.

From the 11.2 fl. oz. bottle with a simple marking of 01_M. Handsome looking medium amber-mahogany colored pour with a modest, lingering off-white head. Lots of nice aroma here including pear, apple, breaded malts, brown sugar, and a touch of spice. The body is medium to bold. The taste is a very sweet tasting Quad with the alcohol well integrated. Despite its sweeter character this is luscious.

330ml bottle from Les Crepes de Sophie, Shrewsbury. This may have a lower score than the original Gulden Draak but I much prefer it. A much more drinkable sweet character with dusty sherbet, candy sugar and possibly a little coriander. Carbonation is perfect but despite a sweet drinkability that 10.5% does start to show it’s potency as you get about 3/4 of the way through. Excellent stuff.

Fine foamy stable head rich sweet deep malty aroma and incredibly rich flavor that is difficult to describe. Has a fizzy palate and reddish gold color. If you like draak, you will like the 9000.

On tap at Global Brew. Pours an orange color with a thin white head that stays. Sweet floral aroma. Taste is sweet pale malt, caramel, a bit of cloying rock candy and a minimal hop tone. Interesting.
