COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Gulden Draak is a high fermentation beer with secondary fermentation. For the secondary fermentation, wine yeast is used. The white bottle, the black banner, the golden dragon and the red letters, constitute a stylish result that has no equal among the many Belgian special beers. Gulden Draak can be drunk as an aperitif or dessert, or whenever you have the time to sit back and relax. But this barley wine is also perfect with and in stews, especially the Ghent variety. It is also a plus in sauces for red meat, such as a bordelaise. It is particularly suited as a dessert beer, especially in combination with dark chocolate.

Brown bottle painted white. Coppery dark amber with a mountainously fluffy pale golden-orange head that produces walls of lace. The aroma is mild, but has some molasses and spice. The body is full, creamy, even syrupy with light carbonation. The taste is sweet, with toffee, nuts, berries. A bit of spice and alcohol in the finish. A big beer but not much really stands out beside the alcohol.

Initial nose is alcohol and harsh molasses. As the head settles, it takes on a more refined aroma with Belgian candi sugar. Very dark, reddish brown, nearly opaque, with a large creamy off-white head. A body this darks looks unique poured out of a white molded bottle. Excellent lace. This brew is the epitome of a strong Belgian Ale, as it is a very strong tasting ale with distinctively Belgian characteristics. The alcohol is a bit harsh. Fairly dry and fairly one dimensional. I’m not really enjoying it.

UPDATED: OCT 16, 2014 Rerate, 330 ml bottle, Cardinal Pub & Bar, Stavanger. ABV is 10.5%. Lovely and harmonious aroma and flavour - I’m upping the score a few points. RBESG 2006 Grand Tasting. 750 ml bottle, ABV is 11.5%. Chestnut colour. INTENSE sweet aroma of oak and fortified wine, spicy notes. Oaky and spicy flavour, warming mouthfeel as expected from an 11.5% ABV beer. No thirstquencher, but an interesting sipping beer.

I expected more from this beer, it was good, and orange taste on it, like most of good belgain beers. The foam was good and the alcoholic taste good. NIce colour and veyr drinkable.

Chestnut brown with lots of foamy head. Aroma is vinous with alcohol presence and lots of caramel malts. Taste is quite sweet with notes of toffee and spice. Alcohol bit to it as it goes down smooth.

BIG apple aroma with some grape notes. The strong apple is surprising acrries trhough into the start of the taste. Then a big candy flavour takes over. Middle is caramel and candy that lasts through the finish.

Rating # 555. Dark amber in colour with medium carbonation. Aromas of berry fruit, bubblegum, sweet malts, and caremel. More sweet malts in the mouth, along with notes of black pepper, wood, brown sugar, and red grape skin. Heavy in the mouth, but the carbonation level keeps it from getting too cloying. Pretty good, but not as good as I had hoped it would be,

An aroma of coffee, with a slight resin finish. Also detected a hint of bubblegum and vanilla. A beautiful red colour, not too cloudy, and minimal head... just the way I like it.To me it tasted quite heavy with cloying sweetness... if you’ve ever used Salon Selextives hairspray, you’ll know what I mean. Flavour is lightly bitter or sour. I teasted cider vinegar. I would use this beer to make a cheese dip served with rye bread. The palate was fizzy and astringent. Again, think hairspray.

[bottle] Dark brown color, kind of like cola or something. Tan head is pretty short. Aroma is subtle and sweet- candi sugar and yeast. Flavors are strange- molasses, sugar sweetness, dark funky fruits. Thick, oily mouthfeel. Alcohol is pretty mellow, leaving some good warmth. Very nice.
