COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Gulden Draak is a high fermentation beer with secondary fermentation. For the secondary fermentation, wine yeast is used. The white bottle, the black banner, the golden dragon and the red letters, constitute a stylish result that has no equal among the many Belgian special beers. Gulden Draak can be drunk as an aperitif or dessert, or whenever you have the time to sit back and relax. But this barley wine is also perfect with and in stews, especially the Ghent variety. It is also a plus in sauces for red meat, such as a bordelaise. It is particularly suited as a dessert beer, especially in combination with dark chocolate.

33cl bottle - pours dark brown, only slightly hazy under the light, with a big off-white head that towered out of my Chimay goblet. Itís a Tripel, but it looks like a Dubbel. Interesting. Aroma is a bit alcoholic, but not unpleasant as it mingles very well with the powerfully sweet ripe fruit and yeast. A bit toffee-like. Same toffee sweetness shows up in the flavour, only accented more, with alcohol warming at the back of the throat and a creamy yeastiness at the front. Ripe dark fruit all the way through, raisins being the most in evidence to me. Mouthfeel is creamy and thick. The ABV definitely shows itself and I started feeling this thing halfway through the glass. A nice and unique Belgian Tripel. Plus, the bottle is fantastic.

Had the good fortune to have the beer on tap. Nice brown color and fairly clear with a nice bubbly head. Complex aroma Ė a bit of a raisin scent up front but gives way to citrus and yeast. Despite the high abv, there wasnít a noticeable alcohol character. Fruity flavor with notes of spice. A very enjoyable beer.

(bottle) Pours a clear brown with a fading head. Soft sweet and fruity on the nose. Bitter bubbling apple-like punch has a smooth finish.

Honey, apples raisins and the usual belgian background. Red brown, creamy head. Sweet malt, apples, citrus, but the flavors lack balance - the front of the mouth promisses a lot which the back does not hold. The strength gives it a seemingly full body. Nice nightcap.

The whole thing about this beer indicates its exceptionel character. The white bottle, the bizzare dragon on the label and the fact that itís a triple even though the colour is deep brown. It forms a dense, lasting head and looks gorgerous in the glass. The aroma is heavy and is full of ripe fruit, berries and a up-front yeasty sensation. the taste is nearly overwhelmeangly sweet, but the slightly metallic hoppiness makes up for it as does the lively carbonation (it is now over an hour since I popped the cap...) It is a fine beer, and even though itís classified as a Belgian Strong Ale, I really get the triple sensation when drinking it.

This brown ale poured with a creamy tan head, eliciting a strong alcohol aroma. Although it is billed as a Tripel style ale, it is more like a Strong Ale in that it is dark-colored and rather sweet. The flavor is of caramel malt, spices, raisins and alcohol. This is a complex and tasty beer.

SO STRONG and yet no taste of alcohol? This is dangerous stuff my friend. Its very sweet, and has a lot of body (so you cant really chug it, but why would you want to). I thought this beer would be much lighter (hence the Gulden name), but its actually more of a ruby color, the head pours quite tall. Butterscoth and caramel are the main flavors. ITLL GET YOU DRUNK!

0.33l bottle at home. Nice ruby-brown color with beige head. There is also some lacing down the glass. Fruity and spicy aroma. Thick mouthful with malty sweet and spicy taste, also some yeast. Very nice balanced ale.

Very nice flavor this Belgian strong ale got. The flavor has hints of raisins and sherry. Now one of my favorite beers.

UPDATED: AUG 30, 2008 Pours with a tan head and reveals a thick alcohol whiff. Smooth and the alcohol reveals itself in the mouthful...a good kicker. Very sweet
