COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Gulden Draak is a high fermentation beer with secondary fermentation. For the secondary fermentation, wine yeast is used. The white bottle, the black banner, the golden dragon and the red letters, constitute a stylish result that has no equal among the many Belgian special beers. Gulden Draak can be drunk as an aperitif or dessert, or whenever you have the time to sit back and relax. But this barley wine is also perfect with and in stews, especially the Ghent variety. It is also a plus in sauces for red meat, such as a bordelaise. It is particularly suited as a dessert beer, especially in combination with dark chocolate.

I love the white opaque bottle with black label, very curious as to what lurks inside. Pours a dark cloudy mahogany, with a big sinister off-white head. Aroma was floral and fruits, with a very seductive alcohol vapour that is very appropriate somehow. Taste was strong caramel, with a lot of warming alcohol as well as dark fruits and toffee. Very smooth, and while the alcohol is prevalent, it was also very tasteful and appropriate to such a sinister brew. I want to find a big bottle of this for New Year’s...

UPDATED: AUG 7, 2005 Aroma is sweet with a hint of vinegar. Appearance is a dark reddish brown with a little hazing. The head has lots of small bubbles. Its perfectly carbonated and that gives it a smooth palate. The flavor has raisins, nuts, bitter hops, allspice, and caramel. The finish is malty and the high amount of alcohol gives you a warming sensation. Its a great beer to sip and enjoy slowly.

Part of the globalbeernetwork 6-pack. I saved this for last. Pours dark brown with a big tan head. Smells of anise and caramel. Biscuit or bready aromas, too. Taste. Wow. Dominated by malty/caramelly flavors, they soon give way to a cinnamon like spice and then the alcohol hits you. This feels like a abt to me, regardless I loved it.

Man what a monster. I must say, this beer is too much for me. Rich, creamy, nice aroma of wine, some citrus. The head was so big that my first sip was all head and I practically spit it all over the table it was so strong. I must say, the feeling of having a mouthful of foam and feeling like you are going to choke if you swallow is horrible.

Anyway, taste is very full, with some chocolate, fruitiness, but sooo strong with the alcohol. You feel drunk after one sip of this stuff.

UPDATED: JUL 29, 2005 I expected more from this beer. The aroma and taste are way to sweet and alcoholic for me. Just not my kind of beer. (Bottle 33cl)

Bottle. Poured into brandy snifter. Beautiful deep brown/orange in color. Off white head dissipates somewhat quickly, but leaves a nice lacing on the surface. A delight on the nose-- apples, raisins, grapes, and sweet malts. Somewhat on the light side of a medium body, which surprises me with the alcohol content. It does go straight to your head-- a nice afternoon beer! Beautiful mouthfeel-- the alcohol comes through in the middle and end but not too strong. Sticky sweet aftertaste. Very nice.

Great bottle! Deep amber pour with a full head. Deep fruity scent with a mix of malt and alcohol. Flavour varries greatly keeping a thick fruity theme.

Woo what a find, found this up in st andrews while the open was on. Aroma is great, so fuckin deep, sorry about the language. Fruits goes from serious apples and pears, then to oranges and some other citruis fruits, however as it warms more it gets seriously complex and moves to almost an xmas pudding. Taste is also great though not as great as the aroma, full of things to keep u going, and less alcohol than expected. Cant wait to get some more, great beer that we can get in scotland, only £9 to get there.

UPDATED: SEP 5, 2005 [bottle from magic_dave6] pours light brown colour with a moderate creamy head. Nose is fruity, apricots, apples and some lighter citrus fruits, descending into an extremely complex maltyness, raisins, grapes, prunes. Some buiscuity notes and a distinct port note were also present. excellent body, slightly dry finish. bloody good stuff.

UPDATED: JUL 7, 2007 Dark ruby red liquid under a lively though short lived head. Left some decent lacings down the sides of the glass. Aroma of apples and caramel which definitely grew on me. I probably tasted this a little on the warm side, but better than being too cold and missing out on the wonderful flavour. Sweet and bitter. Malty aftertaste. Fairly full bodied, but carries it’s 10.5 like a birthmark. The end came way too soon with this delicious beer.Re-rate: Had this a couple of more times now, and it doesn’t seem any nearly as well contained. Overly sweet and the alcohol OTT. Still a decent beer with plenty of presence, and maybe the latter bottles have been uncharacteristic, but I’m going to have to drop it a few points.
