4.2 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 GregClow (2736) - Toronto, Ontario, CANADA - JAN 9, 2003
Dark red-brown colour with an explosive beige head. Full aroma of yeast, plum, malty caramel and a note of alcohol. Roasty, sweet flavour with caramel, malt, dark cherry. The finish comes on with a slight bitterness, and then a sudden tang of alcohol to remind you that there’s 10.5% in there.

Wow- super cloudy, dark, rich, and full of alcohol. Kind of an odd fermenty note like a bitter or a few wheat beers I’ve tried. Very nice.
4.4 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20 domtom (65) - Bienne, SWITZERLAND - JAN 8, 2003
Dark brown colour with a nice head. Complex and well-balanced aroma, notes of smoke. Long interesting aftertaste. An excellent beer.

(6Jan2003--330mL bottle)
I had my doubts after a couple sips (probably prejudiced by the inferior taste of the other Van Steenberge beers in my special six-pack), but eventually the beer grew on me.
Frothy, coarse (initially), oddly spongelike head, which eventually settles down into something agreeably fine and effervescent.
Cloudy, deep red/brown color.
Malty aroma, with hops, some chocolate, and an enjoyable floral contribution.
Initially, a heavily alcoholic flavor. Biting, burp-inducing, overpowering.
Intensely bitter/sour, it actually induced a gag reflex, much like Ny-quil does.
Fortunately, the beer settled down into an enjoyable strong ale.
Coriander came at me, as well as pronounced acetaldehyde (green apple).
3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 Murphy (1759) - Fort Collins, Colorado, USA - JAN 6, 2003
This tickled me. Tasted more like an english strong ale. Somewhat of a precursor to Arrogant Bastard or Double Bastard. Very rich and full taste with a foamy head. A beer I could drink on a regular basis.
3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 15/20 pivo (2540) - GERMANY - JAN 6, 2003
Strong alcohol nose with smells of raisins, caramel and vinegar. Dark brown color and a lacy tan head. Syrupy and molasses tastes with cinnamon in between and at the end. Full mouth feel and a big warm body. The alcohol is noticeable.

UPDATED: MAR 21, 2004 Dark brown color with a massive off-white head. The aroma was full of yeast, candy sugar, and spiced apples. The flavor had some nice Belgian yeast, sugar, clove, caramel, and apple. Soft carbonated feel. Nice.

Nice look, decent aroma but thats it. I didnt enjoy this ale at all. The aftertaste had a slight metallic taste which totally turned me off. I barely finished this one.
Pretty sad when a Canadian brewery makes a better tasting Belgian Strong Ale(Maudite).
