COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Gulden Draak is a high fermentation beer with secondary fermentation. For the secondary fermentation, wine yeast is used. The white bottle, the black banner, the golden dragon and the red letters, constitute a stylish result that has no equal among the many Belgian special beers. Gulden Draak can be drunk as an aperitif or dessert, or whenever you have the time to sit back and relax. But this barley wine is also perfect with and in stews, especially the Ghent variety. It is also a plus in sauces for red meat, such as a bordelaise. It is particularly suited as a dessert beer, especially in combination with dark chocolate.

UPDATED: NOV 5, 2007 Bottle conditioned and courtesy of the LCBO. Deep brown body with a long-lasting tan head. Aroma of caramel and vanilla. Extremely sweet, chewy flavour, with the caramel coming through again. Goes down very smoothly, and I imagine would pair well with desserts.

Brown body, good, lasting beige head. Aroma is caramel, vanilla, alcohol. Very sweet and warm with ripe prunes, cherries, liquor, dried fruits. Some hoppy notes manage to make their way through the thick maltiness and add some balance to the finish. Smooth, olily, chewy mouthfeel. More alcohol warmth in the aftertaste. A deep and complex, even if a bit extreme, meditation beer.

Tap @ den Tatoverede Enke, Cph. Pours a deep ruby-red with a big creamy yellow-white head. Aroma is sweet and fruity with prunes, vanilla and caramel. Very dubbel-ish flavour: sweet fruity, strawberries, red apples, prunes and a vinious streak. Some spices and herbs as well. Extremely drinkable (the 10,5 % completely hidden)

Pours a deep reddish cloudy brown. Professionally crafted head, as with all the beers from this brewer that I’ve tried. Strong, biting alcohol in the scent, combined with the sweet malts it is reminiscent of liqueur filled chocolates. As I drink and the beer warms, I can also detect some nutty scents -- walnuts?. Ooo, this one is nice. Flavour is quite sweet, balanced by a monster burst of alcohol which appears at the same time a peculiar tang does -- though the tang outlasts the alcohol. Nice, fruity, and quite complex. Vanilla, apples, toffee and caramel. A few hops surface lightly in the aftertaste. Full bodied, though the finish is still somewhat dry. Throat exhibits a lasting alcohol warmth. Yum.

25/10 0.33 l bottle at Hopdevil. Wonderful, brown colored body with big white head. Yes, white. Aroma is not very strong, but nice with caramel, fruits and other sweetness, but quite alcoholic as well. Flavor is great, well, not perfect as Rochefort 8 I had just before this, but very full bodied, nice yeasty, with fruity sweetness and some caramel malts, too. Nice finish, where again alcohol is felt. Tripel or strong ale, surely a great beer, thanks a lot Petra for choosing this one.

Beautiful looking dark beer.. Yummy vanilla and caramel flavors. Feisty carbonation . Not as thick felling as I would have expected from its other qualities

This is one of my favorites on draft. A lot of complex fruit aromas and flavors and a rich malty core.

UPDATED: AUG 22, 2008 A very hot beer. The aroma is decent but not as intense as anticipated, full of sweetness and raisin. Indeed the alcohol is right up front and stays throughout. I appreciate the billowing head with heavy lacing and the beautiful bottling. I like many Belgian strong ales, but in the end it’s the biting alcohol and pummeling spiciness that makes it too tough for me to drink and masks a lot of the complexity that is undoubtedly present. Not a fully enjoyable experience. Update: On tap, much different experience. Much more maple syrup aroma and complex bready, toffee taste. Also noticed a stronger hop presence than many other Triples/Quads. Sweet but not overly so. I didn’t feel the alcohol heat at all this time, so I write the previous bottle off as a bad one. Bumping up my score here.
