COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Gulden Draak is a high fermentation beer with secondary fermentation. For the secondary fermentation, wine yeast is used. The white bottle, the black banner, the golden dragon and the red letters, constitute a stylish result that has no equal among the many Belgian special beers. Gulden Draak can be drunk as an aperitif or dessert, or whenever you have the time to sit back and relax. But this barley wine is also perfect with and in stews, especially the Ghent variety. It is also a plus in sauces for red meat, such as a bordelaise. It is particularly suited as a dessert beer, especially in combination with dark chocolate.

All white bottle. This must do a great job for cellaring as it would keep the light out well. Dark crimson red body beneath a puffy off white head. Lacing covers the snifter I poured it in. Pleasing aromas of dark fruit. Fig, Dates, cherries along with caramel toffee. The taste is good, although this is slightly overcarbonated and that takes away from the elegant flavor. Still, a joy to drink and this has to be the favorite in the 6 pack belgian sample I purchased from Brouwerij Van Steenberge.

Bottle. Dark ruby, with a thin white head. Aroma quite complex, fruity, slightly sherberty, strong alcohol. Malty. Very alcoholic in the taste, fruity. Black Forest Gateau almost. Sweet in the mouth, malty lasting palate. Good, if too rich.

Very strong ale, lots of alcohol present. Aroma and flavors are spicey with tons of cherries with sweet malts. A bit too fizzy and slightly metalic, but otherwise very rich and flavorful, medium body with mild hops in the finish.

UPDATED: JUN 4, 2007 Drak brown color with a medium sized head. Delicious malty raisin aroma. Sweet malty flavor and spicy raisins. Just the slightest bit sour on the palate. A bit of an alcohol bit but what do you expect with 10.5%.

draft at the Yard House - Pours dark amber with a moderate, creamy head. It smells of yeast, candi sugar, and some alcohol along with a hint of dark fruit. The flavor is very sweet. The dark fruit comes through a little bit, as does some spiciness. It’s full bodied and leaves some mild alcohol flavor in the lightly hoppy finish.

I absolutely loved this beer. It poured a dark copper, with a good head. The aromas were incredible: gingerbread, ginger, muffins, cranberries, banana, toffee, I cold keep going. Decent sweetness and a bunch of flavors, I wish I could sip this one for ever. Comparable to fine wine, in terms of the complexity of flavors. Special thanks to my wife, Peggy, for bringing this GREAT beer down from Atlanta.
