COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Gulden Draak is a high fermentation beer with secondary fermentation. For the secondary fermentation, wine yeast is used. The white bottle, the black banner, the golden dragon and the red letters, constitute a stylish result that has no equal among the many Belgian special beers. Gulden Draak can be drunk as an aperitif or dessert, or whenever you have the time to sit back and relax. But this barley wine is also perfect with and in stews, especially the Ghent variety. It is also a plus in sauces for red meat, such as a bordelaise. It is particularly suited as a dessert beer, especially in combination with dark chocolate.

Very dark in colour, sweet aroma with a smooth lite taste. Got it from the tap with a good amount of head that stuck around for a while. It had a real nice kick to it and left a subtle taste of alcohol, which is nice.

Strong carbonation, odd start with hints of malt sweetness, restrained hops, prominent alcohol finish with spicy overtones that feel out of place.

UPDATED: MAR 29, 2006 Excellent belgian ale. Very representative of a dark, sweet ale. Thick lasting head was very appealing, as was the dark brown color. Flavor was strong alcohol, with a great sugary sweet taste. Perfect carbonation really helped this beer to excel.

Had this on tap at the Sharp Edge for $4...pretty good buy. A dark rich brown color with a huge mocha colored head. I couldn’t smell it very well because of the smoke in the bar. Taste was actually very malty and had a lot of sour fruit notes in it. IT also had some sweet caramel flavors going to it. It was very thick and smooth...remarkably easy to drink.

Dark, hazy orangish-brown pour with a creamy full tan head. Roasted malt and coffee aromas with a touch of hoppiness. Full flavor with a strong alcohol presence that is welcomed in this particular instance. Finish is a little harsh at first, but a spicy raisin residue at the end is most enjoyable.

UPDATED: MAY 30, 2006 Re-Rate: Pours a hazy dark brown/crimson color with a big beige and rocky head that diminishes very slowly and leaves a wonderful lacing and film. Aroma is malty and yeasty with some alcoholic kick. It shows notes of vanilla and ripe fruits like apricots, peaches, strawberries and banana. There are also hints of caramel, molasses and brown sugar. Really delightful!. Flavor is strong and sweet, being a mixture of a Quadrupel and a Tripel. Very fruity and sugary with touches of vanilla, banana, brown sugar, milk and caramel. At times it’s a little cloying. Maybe it would benefit from aging. Spices come out nicely. Thick rounded body with a smooth silky texture. Carbonation is rather low. Long alcoholic and sticky finish. Sweet and pleasant aftertaste. A rich and complex beer.

Bottle, 33cl. Dark brown beer, nicely carbonated with a beautiful tan head that lasts long. Aroma of caramel, malt and alcohol, almost like a whisky. Very strong alcohol flavour but everything very well balanced with the other flavours such as malt, spices and raisins. I enjoyed this one a lot.

Very spicy aroma, with cappers and citrics mixed with coffee and toasted touches, and soft alcohol. It has a full body with a nice dark caramel color. The head is beige, large and long-lasting.

1.14.06 A pretty bitchin’ Belgian brew. It’s good to have a solid Belgian strong now and then . How do they live? Brownish, white head. Spices and sweetness dominate the flava.

UPDATED: JUN 4, 2007 pours a hazy brownish color with a large off-white head, aroma of caramel, belgian spices, citrus and floral hops, taste is slightly sweet with a bitter finish, not to bad good solid belgian body.
