3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Rating # 555. Dark amber in colour with medium carbonation. Aromas of berry fruit, bubblegum, sweet malts, and caremel. More sweet malts in the mouth, along with notes of black pepper, wood, brown sugar, and red grape skin. Heavy in the mouth, but the carbonation level keeps it from getting too cloying. Pretty good, but not as good as I had hoped it would be,

An aroma of coffee, with a slight resin finish. Also detected a hint of bubblegum and vanilla. A beautiful red colour, not too cloudy, and minimal head... just the way I like it.To me it tasted quite heavy with cloying sweetness... if youíve ever used Salon Selextives hairspray, youíll know what I mean. Flavour is lightly bitter or sour. I teasted cider vinegar. I would use this beer to make a cheese dip served with rye bread. The palate was fizzy and astringent. Again, think hairspray.

3.8 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
[bottle] Dark brown color, kind of like cola or something. Tan head is pretty short. Aroma is subtle and sweet- candi sugar and yeast. Flavors are strange- molasses, sugar sweetness, dark funky fruits. Thick, oily mouthfeel. Alcohol is pretty mellow, leaving some good warmth. Very nice.

4.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
What strange beer. It is like a stout/Belgian.
Appearance: The darkest Belgian I have seen. It pours a completely opaque Maple syrup brown.
Smell: It has a strange dark musty smell that made me think of my immediately of my boots. I donít think it is a foot odor smell I think it may be the smell of leather that I am picking up. I have also heard before about a beer described as smelling like a horse. I think that would apply in this case. Anyway, it also gives me a huge amount of dark fruits and shoo-fly pie, brown sugar, molasses, caramel, very toasted malts and blueberries. Under everything else there is the tiniest bit of alcohol that does creep out into your nose.
Taste: Extremely sugary. Tons of dark brown sugar. Well toasted almost burnt malt taste along with the plums, red grapes and dark fruit sweetness. It has a bit of the alcohol showing through (in a wine like attribute) which definitely dries it up in the mouth a bit. It has the most gentle floral hop character that you could ask for. There is just enough subtle sour (tart) in the aftertaste to balance out the immense sweetness on the front end.
Mouthfeel: Syrupy and very thick. This is a very heavy big beer from all measurements.
Drinkability: I am giving this a 4.5 drinkability not because it is an easy drinking beer but because I LOVE drinking this beer. You must be careful with this bad boy. Seriously; it is more than the 10.50 % ABV it is very heavy and if you donít take it slow you WILL regret it. This is a nightcap beer. I certainly donít want to put anything on top of this, other than a glass of water and a good night sleep.
Hope this is helpful.

Images of Teutonic warriors drinking all day in ancient taverns come to mind when I enjoy this ale. Golden brown in color with a powerful smell of apricots and hard candy. Taste is pleasant with no disenable bitterness. The mouth feel is also well balanced. This is one of the better ales I have had. I prefer it to the heavier and more aromatic Maredsous 10

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle. Very dark brown/red.. rich creamy head. Intense aroma... sweet and malty. Taste is complex, again, sweet and malty but with a sourness I was surprised by. Alcohol is very present.. A very rich beer indeed and one that Iíll have to revisit.

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 14/20
UPDATED: MAR 5, 2007 Bottle: very thick and mouth coating, very lively and carbonated, rich, the flavor is very intense although not complex, some floral aroma, very sweet, a little too much for me, yeasty and bready that gives some weak sourness, glucose like sweetness, some fruity notes, the alcohol is a bit too noticible in the flavor, very much like a liqueur of some kind, some weak nutty notes. overall a pretty good beer.

Pours out a clear reddish hued brown with a nice white head. The aroma is of some fruit and some malty notes. Taste is complex with noticible alcohol. Notes of toffee some malts and some dried raisin flavors. A very solid beer
