Gulden Draak is a high fermentation beer with secondary fermentation. For the secondary fermentation, wine yeast is used. The white bottle, the black banner, the golden dragon and the red letters, constitute a stylish result that has no equal among the many Belgian special beers. Gulden Draak can be drunk as an aperitif or dessert, or whenever you have the time to sit back and relax. But this barley wine is also perfect with and in stews, especially the Ghent variety. It is also a plus in sauces for red meat, such as a bordelaise. It is particularly suited as a dessert beer, especially in combination with dark chocolate.

Poured from bottle - Belgian sampler. Got out my fluted glass for this one. Smells like french toast - nice. Deep mahogany color with tan, persistent head. I taste raisin, cocoa, vanilla, fig, brown sugar, and, of course, alcohol. Mellowed nicely as it warmed, and finished amazingly well. Another great Belgian ale.

0,75l bottle at Kaisla, Helsinki. The aroma is simply fantastic. A fresh citrusy, zesty feeling with some darker tones like plum. The colour is dark brown, with medium head. The taste is absolutely superb, a tingling mix of orange and even some smoke! Wow!

The good people at Sam’s said this was a good dessert beer, although it’s nowhere near as sweet, or by contrast bitter, as I expected. Nice brown color with a sprightly head, it’s hard to figure out all the flavors before the secondary alcohol taste hits. You can tell there’s a lot of tasty things going on in this beer, but maybe if the alcohol content wasn’t so high and prevailant it might be easier to track...though that might defeat the purpose. Sort of a hung jury on this one.

Very dark brown in colour. Bittesweet taste. A lot going on in this beer, I wouldn’t know where to start in describing the aroma and taste. Mocha. figs, honey, toffee, etc. Try it if yo you can find it. I love the bottle too!

Murky brown color with a quickly receding head-good lacing though. All I can say is wow! Sweet but not overly so. Fruity, malty, some butterscotch and toffee as well. Packs quite a punch at 10.5 ABV. Excellent.

UPDATED: OCT 14, 2006 Cloudy, amber pour. Clingy, lasting head. Very rich, fizzy, and thick mouthfeel. Complex aroma. Flavor is almost all yeast, some fruit, spice, and maybe some wood. Not overly sweet as I was expecting. Alcohol is well disguised and the sweetness comes mostly in the finish. This beer must be sipped.

Definitely an exception as far as style goes, very interesting hints of dark fruit, nice sweetness, complex flavor throughout, spice, fruit, oak, alcohol is present but not overwhelming as i would expect

Big offwhite head; hazy dark brown body. Dense, bready, yeasty aroma with strong spice and wood notes. Sweet, with alcohol notes. Deep, intensely sweet, broad-bodied spice and smoky wood taste. Very complex, yet harmonic. Considerable alcohol heat. Dry, spicy wooden aftertaste. Bitterness lingers in the mouth. A great beer. (0.3l bottle.)
