Gulden Draak is a high fermentation beer with secondary fermentation. For the secondary fermentation, wine yeast is used. The white bottle, the black banner, the golden dragon and the red letters, constitute a stylish result that has no equal among the many Belgian special beers. Gulden Draak can be drunk as an aperitif or dessert, or whenever you have the time to sit back and relax. But this barley wine is also perfect with and in stews, especially the Ghent variety. It is also a plus in sauces for red meat, such as a bordelaise. It is particularly suited as a dessert beer, especially in combination with dark chocolate.

Beautiful amber pour with a thick creamy head. Aroma of caramel and malt. Taste is sweet that mask the strong alcohol content. A little too sweet for my palate but still an outstanding brew.

750 mL. Pours a deep reddish chestnut brown with a thin dark tan head. Strong, sweet Belgian malt aroma with a hint of savory spices. Taste is pretty sweet as well, but here we have a too strong of a sweetness, which really takes over. This brews lacks a higher level of complexity that top-tier Belgian Strongs have. Still a quality brewm though.

Pours a deep brown with a creamy, off-white head. Aroma is fig, malt, and candy sugar. Taste is roughly the same, with some nice complexities in the taste. An excellent beer, and a pleasant surprise. Didnít realize it was so alcoholic until after the fact; itís well-hidden.

Poured a solid woody brown. A big solid ale that got better with some breathing. The high alcohol content was not that obvious. Very complex and moreish.

The notoriuos Draak! On tap at the Sharp Edge Bistro, nice place. Pour is like rootbeer. Clear and dark brown. Has a creamy head that fades to a froth after a few minutes.. Aroma is laid back and clean, not hint of the 10% that lurks within. As a matter of fact, there is very little aroma at all. The taste however is a big alky kick in the pants. Mouth and throat warming. Strong and I can feel it making its way down to my tummy. Alky presence is up front, however, it is not the in your face kind of impact, more refined. Like good sherry or brandy. Pretty flat in appearance and on the palate. Each sip brings that hard initial alky smack. It is strong at the beginning of the sip but then morphs to a delicate coating sweetness of bananas and candy. Finish leaves a medium malty bitterness that is hard to forget. Quite a brew with quite a unique impact.

UPDATED: JUL 15, 2007 Deep, reddish brown with a coffee-froth head that mostly disappears. The nose is like the inside of an apple pie: baked apples and cinnamon (you could also compare it to cider). Itís somewhat like sparkling grape juice in its lightly sweet taste, carbonation, and comparable, somewhat herbal bite. In the aftertaste, this bite progresses into a light burning/warmth at the back of the throat. It was hard for me to directly pick out the alcohol in this beer, but I think it just kinda "teamed up" with that herbal quality I experienced, and thatís where I missed it. Not a bad beer, at all, though not my style. I donít normally like the sweet, spicy, warming kind of brews. Iím more of a big, grainy beer guy, but I could tell, quite clearly, how well-crafted this beer is.

Pours a deep mahogany color with a slight red hue when held up to the light. On tap at the brickstore finishing up the night. The fruit flavors and aromas where what I noticed here. One sip I got strawberry and cherry, the next I got more plum and malt. Very complex flavors and aromas.

Everthing from the nordic artwork on the lable, to the barleywine aromas and flavours are sublime. A truly outstanding brew.
