COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Gulden Draak is a high fermentation beer with secondary fermentation. For the secondary fermentation, wine yeast is used. The white bottle, the black banner, the golden dragon and the red letters, constitute a stylish result that has no equal among the many Belgian special beers. Gulden Draak can be drunk as an aperitif or dessert, or whenever you have the time to sit back and relax. But this barley wine is also perfect with and in stews, especially the Ghent variety. It is also a plus in sauces for red meat, such as a bordelaise. It is particularly suited as a dessert beer, especially in combination with dark chocolate.

This is a great beer, got a glass in front of me right now. A little pricey at 3.49 for 11.5 ounces. The alcohol flavor is well hidden compared to some other strong ales I have tasted and doesnt knock your socks off, especially for 10.5%, I like that. Also, the flavor is pretty tasty, nice and sweet. Im seriously thinking about pouring this over some pancakes. One of the better beers I have had. Decent purchase, bang for buck.

Sweet, sweet malt with dried fruit/raisins/dates/maple syrup/caramel/toffee/and brown sugar. Way big alcohol presence, inducing pleasant shivers with each sip. Very good but seems a tad bit overated to my mind.

They were not kidding about that ABV. Those Belgians know how to brew for a party. Actually it is a very good beer. Great aroma with lots of fruit evident. Plenty of apricots. It is also an attractive beer. You have to like the thick, rich head. The taste is advertised as "complex." This was not as true as hoped but to some extent it was. Again, sweet fruit seemed to dominate and I will give them the toffee flavors. Quite nice. Add just a little bitterness and this is a well rounded beer.

This beer sucked. I know that, all and all, the rating of beer is so subjective, that it sometimes borders on ridiculous. In a way, many of us use this site to log our beer drinking experiences. What could be an average beer on one day is a terrible beer on another due to simple mood. That all being said, this beer is nowhere near worth its cash. Decent looking with two-inch fizzy head. Brown/amber. Sniff of a decent Belgian: apple butter, wine and flowers. The taste is simply not that complex. Heavy and sweet, it doesn’t real dance upon the taste buds as I expected it should. Maple taste laced with a little wine flavor and then that’s it. The finish was uncomplex. I will not spend my hard earned cash on this one again. Booo!

Tried this beer for the first time tonight over dinner. Very pleasantly surprised. The beer starts with gentle hits of apple and cherry surrounded by a distinct punch of alcohol, and finishes smoothly with flavors reminiscent of caramel or brown sugar.

(Rating #306)

Poured a brownish copper color. Sweet and fruity aroma with a backing of alcohol. Flavor continued with the sweet fruit and peppery alcohol. Warming. This one is a sipper.

Bottled. Brownish orange colour with nice white foamy head. Sweet malts, fruit and some yeast in aroma. Also a sting of alcohol. Flavour is much sweeter than I thought and consists of sweet malts, alcohol, yeast and fruits. Warming finish.

Medium white head. Dark copper color. Musty Malty cheesy nose. Yeast hits you first on the palate followed by raisin malts to temper the taste throughout. Alchol present but pushed backwards.
