Gulden Draak is a high fermentation beer with secondary fermentation. For the secondary fermentation, wine yeast is used. The white bottle, the black banner, the golden dragon and the red letters, constitute a stylish result that has no equal among the many Belgian special beers. Gulden Draak can be drunk as an aperitif or dessert, or whenever you have the time to sit back and relax. But this barley wine is also perfect with and in stews, especially the Ghent variety. It is also a plus in sauces for red meat, such as a bordelaise. It is particularly suited as a dessert beer, especially in combination with dark chocolate.

UPDATED: DEC 13, 2006 Pours opaque brown color; 2 finger beige head that left some interesting lace; yeast and lots of fruit (too many to pick out) nose; You can tell itís going to be a good one just by the aroma; Taste is incredible; very dark with some caramel and very fruity with only a hint of the alcohol content; Incredibly smooth going down; No bitter backtaste to this at all but a little bit of the alcohol shines through, just enough to know itís there; A very warming feeling afterwards; This is an amazing beer, just watch out for the abv. Itíll take you for a loop! Very cool painted bottle too!

poured a slightly cloudy brown/orange with visible carbonation, average head and lacing. aroma of overripe fruit, taste of fruit and caramel with a decent bitter, warming alcohol finish.

Pretty damn nice. Alcohol well hidden to my headís dismay. Lots of dark fruit, too much to mention. This one is dangerous.

Bottled; 750. This aroma reminds me of Abbaye Des Rocs Triple Imperiale; sweet and yeasty. Dark brown and a very nice thick off white head. No visible sediment. Some complexity in the flavor, with sweet malt, light carmel and dried fruit. Body is not as heavy as I would like. Alcohol is completely hidddn in the flavor. Overall a good beer but it is rather expensive at $12 for this bottle.

Draught @ Brouwerís Cafť: Dark ruby, large beige head, very foamy, lacing that is very cloying. † Sweet bready nose, very dark malts, slightly sweet. † Sweet raisiny flavor, malty, bready, smooth and delicious. † Well hidden ABV, warming, but not hot. † Some dark pitted fruit hidden in amongst the heavy breadiness. † Clean, almost nearing the Quad category. † For a "dark brown triple ale" this is very very good. † Bready finish, slight sweetness, definitely malty, with very slight dark pitted fruit flair. † Very enjoyable, better than I remembered. † Recommended on draught vs the bottle. † Yeah, good stuff.

Do dragons wag their tails? Beer pours a hazy, dark red-brown color with a small, frothy, wihite, mostly diminishing head. Swirls of lace on the glass. The aroma is malty with moderate notes of toasted grain, toasted almonds, cookie and caramel; hoppy with light notes of herbs; yeasty with light notes of basement, trace note of cheese mold; miscellaneous components include moderate notes of brown sugar, spicy alcohol, and light notes of raisin, cognac, cola. The flavor is moderately-to-heavily sweet (in a clean, refined sugar way), moderately bitter and moderately warm with a long, lightly bittersweet, tummy-warming finish. The body is medium, the texture is velvety and the carbonation is lively.

Bottled (nice paint, btw). Dark brown and ruby pour, thick and pretty beige head. Sweet, fruity aroma with alcohol. Full-bodied and alcoholic, fruity and heavily spicy. Similar to its Van Steenberge cousin, Piraat, though darker and less tropical. Watch out, a couple of bottles of Gulden Draak will have you acting like a viking, too.

Not at all what I was expecting from a triple. Cloudy, brown body with a tall tan head. VERY different in both aroma and taste. Loads of malt in the flavor, toffee, some fruit also. Odd flavor that took some getting used to, but once I did, it ejoyed it. The 10.5% alcohol was nice too. The fact that it came in a fully painted bottle rocked, good beer overall.
