COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Gulden Draak is a high fermentation beer with secondary fermentation. For the secondary fermentation, wine yeast is used. The white bottle, the black banner, the golden dragon and the red letters, constitute a stylish result that has no equal among the many Belgian special beers. Gulden Draak can be drunk as an aperitif or dessert, or whenever you have the time to sit back and relax. But this barley wine is also perfect with and in stews, especially the Ghent variety. It is also a plus in sauces for red meat, such as a bordelaise. It is particularly suited as a dessert beer, especially in combination with dark chocolate.

07/20/11. Pours a murky, deep ruby color, like garnet… one of those dark red colors. head is fluffy off-white. Smell is very malty and sweet. Lots of dark fruits, figs, raisins, and something that I can really only describe as red smelling. Kind of like cherry blasters but not as sweet, or sour, but there is a little bit of acidy sweet smell, like balsamic vinegar. Up front its taste is sweet but crisp. Apple-like, but then the caramel flavour of the malts fills it out. You get some spices to, a little bit peppery, but it’s really light. The alcohol starts to come in, at first just for flavour, but then you get the burn. It’s not offensive, it adds really nice flavour. Finish actually has some brief bitterness, but it really rides out the maltiness. the mouth feel is meidum. Not as yeasty as other Belgian beer I’ve had, and again not as spicy, but it’s really nice.

Bottle. Hazy yellow-brown pour with a thick, off white head. Raisiny aroma with a touch of vanilla. Great dried fruit flavor with sweet malts. Medium body with lively carbonation and a little copper penny at the end.

330ml bottle. The beer pours a dark brown color with a large off-white to tan head. The aroma has a lot of Belgian candy sugar as well as some dark fruit and a little bit of toffee. The flavor is full of dark fruit. I get a lot of raisins, as well as some cherry and plum notes. There is a little bit of sweetness from the candy sugar, as well as some brown sugar and molasses notes. The alcohol is very well hidden and is barely noticeable. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation. A very nice beer.
