COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Gulden Draak is a high fermentation beer with secondary fermentation. For the secondary fermentation, wine yeast is used. The white bottle, the black banner, the golden dragon and the red letters, constitute a stylish result that has no equal among the many Belgian special beers. Gulden Draak can be drunk as an aperitif or dessert, or whenever you have the time to sit back and relax. But this barley wine is also perfect with and in stews, especially the Ghent variety. It is also a plus in sauces for red meat, such as a bordelaise. It is particularly suited as a dessert beer, especially in combination with dark chocolate.

This one is from the Peoria, Illinois International Beer Festival. Due to lack of space when drinking, my notes won’t be that great on these beers. Nice aroma with hints of caramel. This was a good beer overall.

neuromatt (610) - Toronto, Ontario, CANADA - APR 28, 2011
33 cL bottle from the LCBO, served in a Trappist glass. Pours hazy reddish brown with a small tan head. The head fades quickly to a thin remnant and leaves a tiny amount of fine lace. The nose is malty with big notes of caramel, raisins and molasses, along with flowers, yeast and a touch of peppery alcohol. The flavour is intensely sweet throughout, with plenty of toffee, raisins and a touch of spice. The hops provide a nice accent in the second half and build towards a long, herby hoppy finish. On the palate, it is medium in body with a smooth, milky texture and soft carbonation. Overall, this is a decent ale with a big malty sweetness and subtle hops. Alcohol is well-hidden, but the malts are a little simpler than I would expect at this ABV. An enjoyable brew.

UPDATED: JUN 28, 2011 Appearance: Bottle into a Chimay trappist glass. Pours a cloudy bronze with a fluffy off-white head which dissipates quickly. Aroma: Strong floral scent and yeast. Some candied sugar and a vinegar-like sourness too. Taste: Toffee and dough. Kinda sour. Notes of honey and dried apricots as well as medicinal elements, hints of spices and herbs too. Unfortunately none of it helps to hide the 10.5% ABV, of which you can taste every point of. Palate: Thick and clingy, aftertaste of booze. Overall: Decent beer. Not the best Belgian, but it’s decent and cheap in comparison to Rochefort or any other trappist beers. Recommended.

lord_totenkopf (167) - Budapest, HUNGARY - APR 26, 2011
Dark amber colour with tan head. Intensive fruit aromas -such as plum, citruses, apricot, peach and some banana- and alcohol fragrances. Taste is sweet (resembles to some kind of cake) but in the finish some bitter herbs and hops come along. Very nice but serious and not easily-drinkable Belgian ale.
