COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Gulden Draak is a high fermentation beer with secondary fermentation. For the secondary fermentation, wine yeast is used. The white bottle, the black banner, the golden dragon and the red letters, constitute a stylish result that has no equal among the many Belgian special beers. Gulden Draak can be drunk as an aperitif or dessert, or whenever you have the time to sit back and relax. But this barley wine is also perfect with and in stews, especially the Ghent variety. It is also a plus in sauces for red meat, such as a bordelaise. It is particularly suited as a dessert beer, especially in combination with dark chocolate.

Pours a dark brown color with a deep red shine and a creamy white head.
Aroma of fresh fruit, sweet caramel malt, slight notes of bread and a sweet candy sugar touch that becomes more sensible after some time. The taste starts caramel sweet with a fruity touch and a hopbitter aftertaste where you can sense a slight coffee aftertaste in. Decent carbonization and body.
A beer that keeps you amused!

UPDATED: APR 6, 2011 Man this was a celebration of good times in my mouth. I loved it and I own the glass. It packs proportionate amounts of precise balance. Although there is no head whatsoever the sweetness balances in between the hops inside it’s glorious color of a feel good warmer darker brownish tone. Yepperdoddle I likey. Very lively like like champagne. Only complaint is that it does start to have an alcohol linger to it near half way through this beer.

Out of a bottle. Red-brown with pillowy head. I was decidedly underwhelmed. Given the 10.5% abv I went in expecting something rich and vibrant. But it was thin, without much in the way of complexity in the aroma department. Some dark fruits, fresh bread hiding in the background but it was all hidden under an excessive bitterness. Long bitter finish without much in the way of aroma. Definitely not round as it proclaims - I found it quite one-dimensional and that dimension was not wholly satisfying.

(bottle) pours a murky dark ruby colour with a frothy off-white head. aroma of dried fruits, raspberries and caramel, with some light grain and traces of alcohol. flavour is the same, the caramel being the most dominant component, with some light notes of green apples and an almost cloying sweetness. heavy-bodied with average carbonation.

On tap for growler fills at Half Time. Pours a clear caramel brown with a thin beige head. Big boozy caramel and toast. Warm vanilla. Caramel, toast, and a bit of booze, big and thick. Sweet chewy candy, long boozy caramel and a lightly tingly finish.

On draft @ Sunset Grill and Tap. Aroma is full of malt and alcohol. You can tell it is going to be a full bodied beer. The appearance is very dark as well with some red shades on the edges. . It has a thick head after pouring however it is quickly dissolved into a thin layer over the beer. The taste is fairly complex with belgian tripel notes coming through but with a heavy dose of malt and dates or figs, One down fall is you can pick up the ABV. Good carbonation that dance over the tongue. Very nice brew.
