4.7 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20 urdhak (1) - CROATIA - FEB 7, 2011 does not count
This is a strong Belgian ale beer. I first tasted it 3 or 4 years ago. Since then I tasted a lot of other Belgian/German and Czech beers, but this one remains the best in my opinion. It has a strong alcohol taste. You can also sense some brown sugar and caramel. The taste stays after you have taken a sip for quite a long time. After 3 of those you are certainly going to feel the booze effect :)
Perfect beer. A classic.
3.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 15/20 Davros (919) - Melbourne, AUSTRALIA - FEB 7, 2011
Pours hazy dark brown with a lasting head.
Nose shows loads of spicy phenols with a fair amount of candi sugar and golden syrup showing through too. Also caramel. Very sweet. Not too mention the spicy alcohol. Very bold aroma, that’s for sure.
Flavours are similarly sweet, with lots of caramel, golden syrup and brown sugar before the alcohol rolls through. Somewhat cloying and boozy in the finish.
Carbonation is crazy high.

3.6 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 socaltay (174) - Ventura, California, USA - FEB 4, 2011
Aroma is full of malt and alcohol. You can tell it is going to be a full bodied beer. The appearance is very dark as well with some red shades when i look through it. It has a full head after pouring however it is quickly dissolved into a thin layer over the beer. The taste is fairly complex with belgian tripel notes coming through but with a heavy dose of malt and dates or figs, something like that. It is a very enjoyable beer. I drank this before I got into the craft beer scene, and that is probably the reason I still buy it.
3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 r464 (943) - Earth, Pennsylvania, USA - FEB 4, 2011
Very dark in color with a foamy tan head. Holding it to the light reveals a mahogany reddish tint. Sweet malty aroma. Strong flavors of malt, dark cherry, and toffee. Strong, not hiding the alcohol content. Dark for a triple.
4.7 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 19/20 wlajwl (1476) - Iowa, USA - JAN 30, 2011
Really lives up to the reputation of being a Belgian style Barleywine, i.e. has some sugar inflections, although there is much more to it than just that. Alcohol is very prominent, balanced flavor, just awesome overall.
3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 Acetobacter (816) - Pennsylvania, USA - JAN 27, 2011
Enjoyed from an 11.2oz bottle in an Orval chalice. The beer pours a light amber color, with a moderate white head. The nose shows light sour notes initially, less subtle hints of alcohol, and somewhat light continental character malt. The palate shows a nice note of fruity yeast-derived esters up front, before transitioning to a less pleasant note of alcohol toward the back end. Yet, the latter adds complexity, and is certainly excusable in a beer of such gravity, with little for alcohol flavor to hide behind. The finish carries a perhaps slightly too sweet note of continental character malt sweetness, with some underlying ester notes. Overall, an enjoyable, if polarizing libation.
4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 flemmingwillum (687) - Copenhagen S, DENMARK - JAN 27, 2011
Rating #490, bottle from Lagersalget
A beautiful red-brown opaque beer. The head could be better, but is not bad at all. Aroma is very nice. Plums filled the room when poured, but when I’m smelling the glass it is more date-like with yeast, wood, chocolate and a bit alcohol. There might be some hidden caramel and banana too. Very fruity taste. There is a lot of plums and apricot, and finish is wood and coffee with a bit alcohol and a solid bitter finish. Very nice. Palate is surprisingly refreshing for a dark beer containing 10,5% Alcohol. This is a good brew, indeed.
