COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Gulden Draak is a high fermentation beer with secondary fermentation. For the secondary fermentation, wine yeast is used. The white bottle, the black banner, the golden dragon and the red letters, constitute a stylish result that has no equal among the many Belgian special beers. Gulden Draak can be drunk as an aperitif or dessert, or whenever you have the time to sit back and relax. But this barley wine is also perfect with and in stews, especially the Ghent variety. It is also a plus in sauces for red meat, such as a bordelaise. It is particularly suited as a dessert beer, especially in combination with dark chocolate.

Pours dark, brown reddish with an good head. Aroma is (dark) fruity and sweet. Taste wasn’t pleasant at all due to the iron which washed away all the other flavours. As it warms up, it improved. Lacks flavour for me and a bit too alcoholic.

Poured from a 11.2 ounce bottle into a Cigar City snifter. Appearance: Pours an opaque mahogany brown with ruby highlights and a small 1/2 finger white head which dissipates quickly. Very minimal lacing. Smell: Dried fruits and alcohol with hints of caramel and Belgian yeast. Nothing spectacular. Taste: Sweet dried fruit up front followed by sweet caramel malt and spices in the middle and ending with a mix of bitterness and sweetness at the finish. Aftertaste is sweet and mildly phenolic. The flavor is delicious. Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied with a nice amount of carbonation. Quite smooth for a beer of this ABV. Drinkability: Very high drinkability. You don’t really notice the alcohol at all so this one could very well sneak up on you. Overall: Excellent beer overall. The flavor is near perfect. I would very highly recommend this one.

UPDATED: DEC 3, 2010 Refrigerated bottle poured into a trappist glass. Pours an orange/amber with small beige head that dissapates fairly quickly. Aroma is a wonderful toffeee, and some brown sugar. Has no lacing, and minimal carbonation. Alcohol is well covered. Taste is dark fruit (mostly fig a hint of dates), some caramel, some breadyness, and some brown sugar. Really light in color for a quadrupel. Good dessert beer.

Bottle consumption and slow pout but still got a SUPER HEAD on this one... that lasts forever. ABV is pretty high, always a plus however, the alcohol is well disguised. The palate is semi sweet with a tangy twinge.

From tap. Cloudy red amber with dense tan head leaving some lacing. Malt and dried fruit in the aroma. Fruity sweet taste with hopbitterness coming out in the finish. Thick enough to chew!! Some alcohol warmth. Not to be underestimated.

UPDATED: SEP 17, 2010 On tap @ The Cheeky Monk in Denver. Pours a hazy brownish copper with a light tan bubbly head. Aroma of cocoa and caramelized bananas. A bit of raisin in the nose too. Taste is primarily of caramel and plum, very low carbonation, yet full bodied flavour. Silky, kinda refreshing.
