The aroma is spiced with bready malts and suggestions of clove, figs, toffee, caramel. The sweetness here is remarkably like actual caramel with light fruity esters to keep it interesting. The finish is juicy and the more I drink, the more I taste cherries. The 10.5% alcohol is hidden entirely. Rather enjoyable. carruthm (1121), Seattle, Washington, USA

A- bananas and fruit spices with some yeast.
T- reinforces the bananas and spices with a bit more snap to it as the alcohol

| 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | May 30, 2008 Presentation: It was poured from a white painted 330ml or 11.2oz bottle into a tulip glass. It is a dark hazy liquid that is dark brown in color with an abundance of small bubbles that form a thick head. The head is light tan in color and has great retention time. The aroma has a sweet and fruity character with yeast and a definite alcohol presence. Up front I get a light sting of tart fruit, sour cherry and yeast that quickly turns sweet and malty. More dark sweet fruits come out now like figs, raison and prune mixed with Belgian candy sugar. The alcohol starts to add some warmth and some herbal hops are detected as it heads to the finish were it turns fairly dry. It is well carbonated yet smooth and full bodied. This is an excellent Belgian Strong Dark Ale with all the complexity and strength that I love in Belgian ales.

| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | May 19, 2008 Sexy bottle, pours a black color in dim light with a off white head, nice looking beer. Slight alcohol aroma that almost smells like red wine. This beer is very smooth, alcohol noticeable towards the end. Sweet flavor that tastes slightly like red wine and brown sugar but is nicely carbonated to remind you of its beerness. TeamTrappist (378), jericho, New York, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 5/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | May 18, 2008 Draft pour. Nice dark brown color with a thin white head. Looks thick and inviting. Strong malt nose, with a med-full bodied flavor. Tastes of hops and some toffee flavors, with a a fairly strong alcohol bite. Had a bottle a while back which had a much strong alcohol bite, but this draft had much less bite.Maybe some aging would help mellow the bite? A very good strong ale.
