COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Gulden Draak is a high fermentation beer with secondary fermentation. For the secondary fermentation, wine yeast is used. The white bottle, the black banner, the golden dragon and the red letters, constitute a stylish result that has no equal among the many Belgian special beers. Gulden Draak can be drunk as an aperitif or dessert, or whenever you have the time to sit back and relax. But this barley wine is also perfect with and in stews, especially the Ghent variety. It is also a plus in sauces for red meat, such as a bordelaise. It is particularly suited as a dessert beer, especially in combination with dark chocolate.

12 oz bottle served in a flute. Pour is dark cherry with two fingers of creamy beige head. Nose is bananas, malt, booze, and dark/sweet fruit. Taste is right on par with the nose, including the subtle banana notes. It finishes sweet, wet, and boozy. I’ve had many a brew the touted 10% + ABV, and hid it like a thief in the night, but this isn’t one of them. The after taste is booze and it lights your chest up the same way liquor does, just not as intense. This is a very tasty beer though, one I would enjoy many more times to come.

Deep purple color in the glass. Taste is almost all hard liquor, some raisins. Nose is the same. I’d probably rate this closer to a 3.8 today. Rated 6/25/02

Dark amber with nice crema that last. Aroma from yeast, malt, caramel, bread, toast, some fruity banana, alcohol. Taste sweet malty, yeast, caramel and fruit. Body is full and text is slight thick. Carb is high. Finish with noteable alcohol and sweetness. Like it.

Bottle pour to Trappist glass gives fairly clear dark brown color with thick off-white head. Typical fruit aroma, a bit more sour than the average. Taste dark fruits, malts, yeast, not particularly sweet. Nice fruity aftertaste. Despite the clear color the palate is fairly thick and pleasing. Alcohol fairly evident, not overpowering but you know it’s 10.5% all right. This is a fairly aggressive quad compared to some. Nice beer.

Bottle. Exceptional beer. Aromas of dough, berries, burnt caramel, and nuts. Taste is sweet, with bitter notes, and long lasting. Palate is syrupy, and full bodied. Dark brown, with a frothy white head.
