COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Gulden Draak is a high fermentation beer with secondary fermentation. For the secondary fermentation, wine yeast is used. The white bottle, the black banner, the golden dragon and the red letters, constitute a stylish result that has no equal among the many Belgian special beers. Gulden Draak can be drunk as an aperitif or dessert, or whenever you have the time to sit back and relax. But this barley wine is also perfect with and in stews, especially the Ghent variety. It is also a plus in sauces for red meat, such as a bordelaise. It is particularly suited as a dessert beer, especially in combination with dark chocolate.

Everything about this beer is fabulous! From the cool bottle to the amazing taste. Pours a dark garnet with a white head. Aroma is toffee, raisins and malts. Taste is nicely carbonated, toffee, raisin/purple fruit and malts. It just plays on the palate. Great Beer.

UPDATED: APR 20, 2011 Poured from a bottle into a snifter. Appearance is a translucent burgundy with a thick beige head. Aroma is dark fruits and a touch of candied sugar. Notes of toffee make an appearance in both the nose and the mouth. The predominant toffee note appears in on the tongue though. Smooth drinking but hits you like a ton of bricks with such an unnoticeable high alcohol content. This is definitely one of my favorite beers, one that I will re-visit very often.

Bottle, aged one year and four months. Served in a snifter. It’s dark brown with a thin stubborn head and good retention. Aroma is full and very complex: fairly malt heavy, bready with lots of damp oak, some pine, caramel, then a fair bit of cherry with raisin and some distant hints of piney hops. Body is full, slightly chewy. Flavour is wonderful. Toffee, caramel and chocolate to begin; more oak to follow, some wildflower, loads of dark fruit, especially cherry. Finish is long with dark fruit, brown sugar, oak.

330 ml bottle from LCBO (part of gift pack). Pours a slightly cloudy dark red with a bit of brown and an average-sized tan head. Aromas of rich toffee, plum, raisin and alcohol. Flavour has sweet dark fruit, toffee and some spice. Moderate alcoholic warmth in the finish. Quite fizzy. Nice.

This triple is murky red brown, deep copper color. It has a plentiful tan head that did disappear. Maybe it was the pour? Sweet sugar malt nose with the presence of alcohol. The full mouthfeel is comprised of malt, sugar, syrup, flower petals, and alcohol. The finish is warm and comforting.

Bottle 33 cl from Boissons Center in Champagny-sur-Yverdon (CH). Beer garnet red, nice beige foam on fine and thight crackling. Round flavor of malt, toffy, orange and alcohol. The mouth is powerful and creamy of malt, barley sugar, spices, fine bitterness, greedy. After the notes of burnt caramel, pear and plum, the final spreads out on a malted sweetness with strength alcoholic and nuance hoppy. Bottle easily recognizable.

UPDATED: MAY 13, 2010 Poured a dark red/brown from a bowling pin. Large foamy off-white head. Aroma is sweet and fruity with lots of malts. Hint of alcohol. Taste is sweet with some caramel and malts. Alcohol is barely noticeable. Slightly too much carbonation. Aftertaste is slightly bitter.
