COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Gulden Draak is a high fermentation beer with secondary fermentation. For the secondary fermentation, wine yeast is used. The white bottle, the black banner, the golden dragon and the red letters, constitute a stylish result that has no equal among the many Belgian special beers. Gulden Draak can be drunk as an aperitif or dessert, or whenever you have the time to sit back and relax. But this barley wine is also perfect with and in stews, especially the Ghent variety. It is also a plus in sauces for red meat, such as a bordelaise. It is particularly suited as a dessert beer, especially in combination with dark chocolate.

Bomber. Pours a very dark ruby with nice large head. The aroma is smokey with notes of citrus. The alcohol is noticeable on the nose. The flavor is sweet and spicy, with cinnamon and cloves, and plenty of orange flavor. Finishes sweet and syrupy. Great belgian ale.

Bottle. Poured a reddish/brown hue with a moderate light brown head that diminished slowly. Full aroma of sweet fruit and alcohol. Medium to full body with smooth texture. Full flavor of fruit, caramel with a solid alcohol bite at the finish.

(Bottle into tulip -- Sampled 2/21/10) Pours a clear dark brown with a small creamy head the stuck around with beautiful lacing through the glass. Nose is heavy with the molasses sweetness of the malts as well as a macerated fruit smell, chiefly of plums, dates, apples, banana, etc. Full bodied in the mouth, as advertised, the carbonation is just right to allow all the fruit notes to pop on the tongue and really develop. As expected with this style, the banana and spice dominate, and the alcohol is very very sneaky. At 10.5% this could be a very good or very bad thing, depending on what you are looking for! Easily one of the best I have tried so far this year.

Bottle. Pours a deep amber-ruby with a thick white head. Gives off aromas of sweet malts, candied sugar, toffee and dark fruits. Deep, rich flavor, huge on the toffee, brown sugar, candy, raisins and figs. Medium to big in body with mild carbonation. Quite warming and full from the ample alcohol. Finishes sweet with only hints of bitterness. Quite delicious.

Deep brown colour. Aroma of sweet dark fruits and malt. Flavour is too sweet, dark fruits dominate the palate it is almost like drinking prune juice. Not very impressed.

Biscuit balt aromoa with heavy alcohol. A bit of fruit as well. Reddish brown, much clearer than expected. Thick malty stuff, some plums or something, quite sweet. Very sweet. Other than the thick syrupyness, there’s not too much else going on. Strong and too sweet, its just ok. I wouldn’t really want to have this one too many more times.

UPDATED: AUG 7, 2010 Upped appearance and palate since the original 7/4/10 rating after being given a fresher, properly carbonated bottle that was bought in France. Rocky persistent off-white head and lively on the palate. Sweetness is approaching excessive.

Original rating from 7/4/2010: 330mL bottle. Poured a clear dark amber with no head to speak of. Aromas of dark fruit, yeast, spice and alcohol. Very sweet and fruity, while the alcohol is quite noticeable. Medium bodied, almost flat with a sweet and spicy finish. 8 3 8 3 15 3.7
