Commercial Description:
Gulden Draak is a dark brown Triple Ale, which makes it an exception among the Belgian Triples. The second fermentation offers the nice creamy head, the full body and all the vitamins of the centuries old brewers yeast. It is a "thick" beer, that you can actually "eat" to adventure the complex taste. Gulden Draak balances a natural malt toffee-like sweetness with a mellow happiness and some hoppy accents. The aroma is round, sweet and reveals the 10.5 alcohol by volume.

Sampled at an outdoor beer tasting sponsored by Doti Liquors, Elmhurst, IL. Poured to my fest/wine glass a hazy, deep brown tone with a modest, off white/light tan head that reduced to a ring and film, and left some light lacing. The aroma was toasty, brown sugar sweetness, dark fruit, and some caramel. The flavor was the same strong notes, with a thick, syrupy texture, light, almost imperceptible bitterness, and warming alcohol. Maybe a little too sweet for me, but still very tasty.

Bottled. Poured dark w/a relatively small head. Sweet raisins, malt and toffee and sugars. Not a ton of hops and kind of a thin finish.

Bottle poured into a tulip. Poured a dark brown with big frothy off-white head. Aroma of big dark fruit, yeasty sweet bread, and booze. Taste threw me off, not what the aroma led me to believe it would be. Taste was a lot of apple, grape, and raisins. Sweet sticky mouthfeel, syrupy and boozy. A good quad, although VERY sweet.

Julio’s Belgian Beer Festival. Sample. This is too much belgian for me to handle. I found the alcohol to be overpowering to the point that it masked all the other flavors that might have been present. I can see that I am in the minority here though.

Got this in a mix-6 pack of Belgian beers and enjoyed it very much at a Halloween party last fall.
