Gulden Draak is a high fermentation beer with secondary fermentation. For the secondary fermentation, wine yeast is used. The white bottle, the black banner, the golden dragon and the red letters, constitute a stylish result that has no equal among the many Belgian special beers. Gulden Draak can be drunk as an aperitif or dessert, or whenever you have the time to sit back and relax. But this barley wine is also perfect with and in stews, especially the Ghent variety. It is also a plus in sauces for red meat, such as a bordelaise. It is particularly suited as a dessert beer, especially in combination with dark chocolate.

Pours a dark nearly opaque amber with a nice pale head. Aroma is very fruity, a mixture of raisin, molasses, and maybe cherry? This beer is lively but not over-carbonated - it had a steady stream of bubbles throughout. Taste is intense. A heavy alcohol mixed with sour cherry and yet a little on the sweet side. Body is heavy, you can almost chew this one. Almost no bitter, not even at the end. The finish is a long lasting alcohol warmth. Im not one for tripels but this one is a keeper. Not too sweet, not too bitter. Overall, this is a really good example of a dark tripel.

Mahogany colour; impressive foam : golden beige, ultra thick, leaves fascinating drawings - spectacularly beautiful. Smells of malt, alcohol, dried fruit, plum, caramel. Coffee, plum, candi; coating and structuring bitteness. Very nicely balanced, gourmande but also fine.

Dark mahogny colored. Hazy. A three finger high, beige, head that leaves lacing on the glass.

Nose: Caramel malt, honey, brown sugar, fudge, red berries, raisin, Belgian yeast, spice and hops.
Taste: Sweet malt, honey, plum, cherries, brown sugar and dark fruit.
Body: Complex structure. Great texture. High carbonation. A hint of bitterness that stands up to the sweetness.

This is a GREAT beer!

Bottle, given as a gift, it?s been many years since I?ve had this, and always remember this as a poor example. Nose is brown sugar, dark fruits, plums raisins, slight mustiness. Taste is drake fruits, yeast, brown sugars, hint of banana, slight cream note, hint of stewed apple, glacier cherry, sherry, candy sugar. Mouthfeel is over carbonated. My memory of the beer was sound, it has some interesting elements but is ultimately cloyingly sweet, it needs something other than sweet tones to lift the beer. Edit: the biggest flaw emerges late on in the glass. As it warms and opens up the burnt sugar taste increasingly dominates and is a little unpleasant

8/20/2006 12:27:53 PM Bottle at home. Moderate head, lots of alcohol taste. Very strong, tad bitter. Hoppy smell. Taste too overpowering. Can taste coffee and toffee hints. Too much alcohol though. Still, excellent.
