COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Gulden Draak is a high fermentation beer with secondary fermentation. For the secondary fermentation, wine yeast is used. The white bottle, the black banner, the golden dragon and the red letters, constitute a stylish result that has no equal among the many Belgian special beers. Gulden Draak can be drunk as an aperitif or dessert, or whenever you have the time to sit back and relax. But this barley wine is also perfect with and in stews, especially the Ghent variety. It is also a plus in sauces for red meat, such as a bordelaise. It is particularly suited as a dessert beer, especially in combination with dark chocolate.

Pours a dark nearly opaque amber with a nice pale head. Aroma is very fruity, a mixture of raisin, molasses, and maybe cherry? This beer is lively but not over-carbonated - it had a steady stream of bubbles throughout. Taste is intense. A heavy alcohol mixed with sour cherry and yet a little on the sweet side. Body is heavy, you can almost chew this one. Almost no bitter, not even at the end. The finish is a long lasting alcohol warmth. I’m not one for tripels but this one is a keeper. Not too sweet, not too bitter. Overall, this is a really good example of a dark tripel.

Ruby color with huge beige head. Aroma of mandarins, plums, molasses, cheese, basement, some booze, raisins, vanilla, rape bananas. Taste is medium sweet with a lot of fruity flavor. Medium body, stick texture, flat to to soft carbonation. It’s hard to say that is 10,5% ABV, its so nicely balanced and smooth.

A very nice beer. Translucent Brown/dark red in appearance. Very sweet, smelling of toffee and raisin. Taste is not as sweet as its aroma puts forth. In fact has a mild sweetness but a very strong alcoholic after taste, which stays on well after the sip.

Pours a dark mahogany color with a big creamy head that fades slowly to good lacing. Aroma of roasted malt, dark fruit, spice, bit of caramel sweetness, with a hint of alcohol. Taste of roasted malt, a mild caramel sweetness. Mild bitterness and a clean finish with just a bit of lingering spice. Medium body, smooth and creamy. Very good balance. Has a warming feeling. Very enjoyable beer. Worth checking out.

Cider brown with big, foamy, fine bubble, tan head, some legs / Sweet & sour, somewhat nose of sour malt, orchard fruit, dark caramel, tea, oak / Medium to full body, sweet & syrupy, hint of sourness, somewhat cloying with minimal hopping / Very sweet, cooked flavors of turning apple, date, sweet tea, caramel, honey, nut / See I’m disagreeing with 2000 ratings, but this is mediocre at best.

Color is a deep ruby hue. Very sweet thick, rich, creamy, tan head, and a vibrant carbonation. The nose on this beer is very inviting, with lots of good sweet, caramel/toffee aroma, paired with fruity aromas, and peppery alcohol. The plate is firm, with lots of flavors going on. Cocoa and caramelized bananas, toffee, brown sugar, pair with sour big fruity flavors of plum, raisin, and apple. This beer finishes with more excellent sweet sour flavors, then ends with some warming, soothing, alcohol. Super duper delicious. Two of these is perfection.

On tap at Black Bottle Brewery. Caramel colored and cloudy. The aroma is caramel malts, dark fruits, sugar, light chocolate and light booze. Similar flavor, fairly sweet with a slick smooth feel. Good stuff.

A - Dark brown with ruby highlights. A nice 3 finger tan head with good retention and very nice lacing. S - Dark fruit, roasted grain, tart apples, dark cocoa, mild spices. T - It starts sweet with metallic brown sugar, deep chewy malt, boozy dark fruits, raisins, vanilla, and some bitter cocoa then turns tart with green apples, berry fruit. Finishes with a peppery bitterness. M - Moderate carbonation-almost too much, dry finish, medium bodied due to the carbonation. This is a different BSDA. I like that’s it’s very sweet without being cloying and finishes very dry. Lots of cocoa in there as well. Serving type: bottle 07-24-2011

Bottle at The Pub, Leicester, just prior to LCFC beating Watford 1-0 in the play-offs. Fabulous. So smooth - a blend of so many flavours, with nothing taking precedence: that is a success for me. Love the warming notes. Rich sweet malts, with all the other associated notes.

Bottle. Pours slightly hazy copper brown with airy but stable off-white head. Clear aroma of malt with distinct flowery and fruity notes. Sweet, malty onset with touches of caramel, ending bitter, on a hoppy note. Rich body. Creamy mouthfeel. A good thing.
