COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Gulden Draak is a high fermentation beer with secondary fermentation. For the secondary fermentation, wine yeast is used. The white bottle, the black banner, the golden dragon and the red letters, constitute a stylish result that has no equal among the many Belgian special beers. Gulden Draak can be drunk as an aperitif or dessert, or whenever you have the time to sit back and relax. But this barley wine is also perfect with and in stews, especially the Ghent variety. It is also a plus in sauces for red meat, such as a bordelaise. It is particularly suited as a dessert beer, especially in combination with dark chocolate.

[Sampled in july 2004 at the BÆNK.] Very strong alcoholic, but wonderful beer with notes of licorice, bitterness, caramel, warmneth, berries. Medium to fullbodied and a great burning aftertaste.

On draught at De Garre. Pours a dark ruby brown colour with a thick and lasting light tan head. Aroma of biscuity malt, candy sugar, caramel, chocolate and alcohol. Similar flavours with moderate carbonation and a foamy mouth-feel. Nice with fairly prominent alcohol.

Fabulous beer. Aroma is sweet, like raisins mixed wth honey. Taste is dates with an initial burn of alcohol which mellows quickly. One of my all time favorites

Bottle. Pours amber-orange and clear with a large foamy tan-orange head that laces well. Aroma of roasted malt, some sweet fruit, and earthy yeast. Alcohol notes in the aroma right after the pour, but they disappear quickly. Taste is moderate sweet, berries, earthy yeast and alcohol, with roasted malts filling up the middle body.

Dark golden with top head. Nose of malts, sugar and dark fruits. Quite nice taste of chocolate, berries, coffee, toffee and malts. Creamy texture. Very enjoyable.

Mahogany brown color with fizzy light tan colored head. Pours really beautifully. It has nice licorice note. It have incredible taste and flavours, strong but in a best way. You really dont have such a strong feeling of that 10.5 ABV what is good thing. You get that sweet wineish taste. Great thing to drink slowely with dinner.

Awesome pure Blonde strong ale...hugely complex with high ABV that is well hidden. This has a fine wine quality to it that is very appealing...

November 2008: I am a little annoyed with myself because this beer has been reviewed out of date, by 20 days. It has been stored in my garage (for at least two years) with about 100 other different beers awaiting its turn to be reviewed. My stash obviously isn’t it the correct order. A weekend will now be devoted to re-organising my supplies. I am no stanger to this beer but do not own the correct glass, one of my Corsendonk Grand Cru tulip shaped glasses is the nearest I’ve got and was used in this review. The normal white covered brown 33cl bottle was opened and straight away you know a Belgian beer is in your hand, the rich malty aromas leap out at you. Malt loaf, christmas pudding, creamed plums, all rolled into one huge explosion of the sences. Deep ruby red in colour with a large off-white foaming head, it looks a picture and that smell just doesn’t go away. Raisens join the party in the tasteing stakes, they add a new dimension to the flavours already mentioned in the aroma. The alcohol kicks in and the carbonisation is just perfect for taking it into your system at the right speed. Don’t even think about driving if you even smell this beer!

A ridiculously intense and complex beer - deep dark reddish brown color, despite being a tripel. Nose is pungent: chocolate, caramel. Thick, smooth, alcohol comes through heavy in the flavor but not in an unpleasant way. A pleasure, to be sipped slowwwwly. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Deep reddish brown, slightly cloudy, next to no head; intense perfume of stewed fruits and spice; the taste of fruity Christmas cake mutates into sweetness, spice and an unobtrusive alcoholic warmth; full mouthfeel gives a nicely subdued tingle; finish is sweet, long and complex; a lovely warming beer ideally requiring a couple of hours on a snowy December’s evening to fully appreciate.
