Gulden Draak is a high fermentation beer with secondary fermentation. For the secondary fermentation, wine yeast is used. The white bottle, the black banner, the golden dragon and the red letters, constitute a stylish result that has no equal among the many Belgian special beers. Gulden Draak can be drunk as an aperitif or dessert, or whenever you have the time to sit back and relax. But this barley wine is also perfect with and in stews, especially the Ghent variety. It is also a plus in sauces for red meat, such as a bordelaise. It is particularly suited as a dessert beer, especially in combination with dark chocolate.

Dark reddish brown, with a bubbly off white head, great lacing. The nose offers lots of dark fruits like plums, cherries and raisins, followed by sweet candy sugar. There’s a bunch of alcohol in the nose too. The taste is sweet sugar, bubblegum, cottong candy, and spice up front. Mouthfeel is creamy.

Pours opaque deep amber with a fat finger of light tan head, excellent retention, moderate lacing. (4/5) Nose is caramel/toffee, slight bubblegum, raisins, spices. (8/10) Taste is moderately strong sweet, mild bitter. (8/10) Full body, prickly sustained carbonation, and a mildly spicy boozy finish. (5/5) Another excellent BDSA - not quite as “christmas-y” as the 2012 Vicaris Winter I had immediately before, but still quite spicy and pleasantly warming. I was just reading the commercial description, and the idea of this in a stew or as a bordelaise base, makes me drool. I’ve got myself just about convinced I can taste the difference made by the wine yeast they use in the secondary fermentation, and am detecting a hint of vinous character as it warms. Just slightly better than the Vicaris, perhaps. (17/20)

Copper dark, interesting caramel with no sweetness, butterscotch, a hint of citrus. Very, very strong and mouthfeel. Belgium on the ride!

Bottle from Juustukuningad (€ 3.55). Pours a murky copper colour. Head is massive and frothy with big bubbles. Retains and laces moderately well. Nose is intense sugary sweet caramel, some maltiness, bubblegum, indistinct dark fruits, but also some alcohol coming through. Taste is sweet of caramel and honey, raisins and plums, as well as some bitterness and wine acidity in the finish. Alcohol is present but not overly so. Body and carbonation both around average. Soft and only slightly grainy on the palate. Pretty good but I’m not entirely convinced.

330ml bottle from BePLUS, Xiamen. Pours hazy dark brown with a thin white head. Aroma of Belgian yeast and caramel. Sweet caramel finish. Can get the alcohol in this one. Nice.

On Tap at "The Yard". Nice caramel color. Slightly thick and syrup like but not too thick. It was like drinking liquid caramel. Not too sweet but just enough too balance out the high alcohol content. Good for sipping. Drinks smooth with little aftertaste. It didn’t feel like I was drinking a beer. It wasn’t my favorite style but it was enjoyable.
