3.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 13/20
Poured as a full (20cm high) glass of beige coloured foam that slowly diminished then eventually collapsed to provide a translucent golden brown coloured beer. Laced well. Aroma of sweet caramel with slight malt and yeast hints. Taste of sweet caramel, malt, a slight roasted grain hint and a “burning” alcohol sensation. Medium body, thinner than I expected. Finish of sweet caramel and spicy alcohol. High ABV makes for an interesting beer.

C’est costaud. Ca a du goût, un fort niveau d’alcool. Intéressant. J.en avais un meilleur souvenir tout de même. A retester dans d’autres conditions.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Classic ’massieve ale’ honouring the dragon on top of the Ghent belfry tower. The white bottles, though restyled nowadays, are immediately recognizable. Pours a deep hazy burgundy colour with wine-red hue under a yellowish light beige, moussy head which retains surprisingly well considering the ABV. Malty aroma with the unmistakable bitterish Van Steenberge yeastiness, impressions of caramel, honey, raisins, chocolate candy, (a little too much) iron probably hailing from head stabilizing agents, walnuts, cream, grass, bourbon, orange peel, dough, banana, cloves and something vaguely sulphuric (DMS). Sweet fruity-estery taste, almost cloying candi syrup, soft and fluffy mouthfeel, yeasty, banana, candied dates and candied orange, spicy accents, smooth caramelly and somewhat nutty malt sweetness, a bit chocolatey and honeyish as well, full, with an agreeable finish of lingering candi and malt sweetness nicely balanced with gentle grassy hop bitterishness and warming, liqueurish alcohol. Potent and rich, this is a perfectly acceptable winter warmer; I have always considered this the best of the regularly produced Van Steenberge brews and this tasting session has only affirmed this to me. It does have a little bit more elegance from tap and from the 75 cl bottlings, though. People who like this, do have to try the new Quadrupel version of it as well; I would not, however, recommend the lighter Vintage version over the original.

4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20
Pours opaque deep amber with a fat finger of light tan head, excellent retention, moderate lacing. (4/5) Nose is caramel/toffee, slight bubblegum, raisins, spices. (8/10) Taste is moderately strong sweet, mild bitter. (8/10) Full body, prickly sustained carbonation, and a mildly spicy boozy finish. (5/5)
Another excellent BDSA - not quite as “christmas-y” as the 2012 Vicaris Winter I had immediately before, but still quite spicy and pleasantly warming. I was just reading the commercial description, and the idea of this in a stew or as a bordelaise base, makes me drool. I’ve got myself just about convinced I can taste the difference made by the wine yeast they use in the secondary fermentation, and am detecting a hint of vinous character as it warms. Just slightly better than the Vicaris, perhaps. (17/20)

3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Bottle from Juustukuningad (€ 3.55). Pours a murky copper colour. Head is massive and frothy with big bubbles. Retains and laces moderately well. Nose is intense sugary sweet caramel, some maltiness, bubblegum, indistinct dark fruits, but also some alcohol coming through. Taste is sweet of caramel and honey, raisins and plums, as well as some bitterness and wine acidity in the finish. Alcohol is present but not overly so. Body and carbonation both around average. Soft and only slightly grainy on the palate. Pretty good but I’m not entirely convinced.

Corsée, un goût torréfié pas très sucré mais accessible, manque un peu de longueur je trouve et une bouche plus à mon goût mais bonne bière. Bouteille bue au bar Hall’s beer tavern, Paris, France, le 24/10/2013.
