COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Gulden Draak is a high fermentation beer with secondary fermentation. For the secondary fermentation, wine yeast is used. The white bottle, the black banner, the golden dragon and the red letters, constitute a stylish result that has no equal among the many Belgian special beers. Gulden Draak can be drunk as an aperitif or dessert, or whenever you have the time to sit back and relax. But this barley wine is also perfect with and in stews, especially the Ghent variety. It is also a plus in sauces for red meat, such as a bordelaise. It is particularly suited as a dessert beer, especially in combination with dark chocolate.

My first Gulden Draak was so very odd, it being my first barley wine. It tasted like garbage to be honest. A few days later I tried it again. Then I loved it. Alcohol fumes are prevalent.

Pours mahogany with a yellowish head. Aromas of dark fruit, yeast, and caramelized sugar. Tastes of toffee, clove, burnt sugar, apple, maybe a little banana. A hint metallic. Nice and smooth, overall an awesome dark Belgian.

Copper brown with an off-white head. Has a plum and date flavor profile. But it’s a bit one-dimensional and lacks some additional rich flavors to make it really stick out. It’s surprisingly refreshing though considering the ABV. But it’s mostly a sugary alcohol flavor with some plum, but still a good drink.

A damn fine beer. Very, very malty. Almost like a dopple bock. Very rich..chewy...with all the great flavors of dried fruit carried along by the warmth of the alcohol. Really enjoyed this one!

Doftar torkad frukt, jäst och lite sprit. Mycket smakrik, körsbär och russin bl.a. och kroppen är finfin. Balanserad och väl maskerad alkoholhalt. Bra Belgien!

Map Room-On tap 1/8/05-I picked this over a Piraat because I’ve had that beer more and have only tried this in the bottle. Slightly sweet, with some nice estery qualities. Not my favorite belgian, but a nice beer.

UPDATED: FEB 7, 2009 Bottle at St. Veronus. Incredible beer! I was recommended this as an alternative since all the Rocheforts were out. Very large head which made this gem look gorgeous in the tulip. Aroma was fairly pleasant and fruity, but rather faint. The flavour on this thing is gorgeous! It tastes to me like a hot-rodded Chimay Bleu. This is exactly what Chimay is missing. Taste is of molasses, brown sugar, plums and caramel. Full-bodied with a creamy mouthfeel. One of the best belgians I have had.

I like this beer. For the high alcohol, you don’t notice the taste. Sweet, spicy and a nice fruity flavor. There’s a photo of me having this beer with Jeff, the 7th generation of the family at: http://www.callzia.com/Tours/VanSteenberge/index.h

Huge lasting tan foam! Nice appearance with a dark unclear brown color. The smell gives away that this one holds 10.5%. Hints of fruit mand sweetness. Strong taste with sweet hints of caramel, flowers, fruits and a complex finish that warms the throat. The foam actually tastes good on its own, try it :-)
