Gulden Draak is a high fermentation beer with secondary fermentation. For the secondary fermentation, wine yeast is used. The white bottle, the black banner, the golden dragon and the red letters, constitute a stylish result that has no equal among the many Belgian special beers. Gulden Draak can be drunk as an aperitif or dessert, or whenever you have the time to sit back and relax. But this barley wine is also perfect with and in stews, especially the Ghent variety. It is also a plus in sauces for red meat, such as a bordelaise. It is particularly suited as a dessert beer, especially in combination with dark chocolate.

Pours a dark, hazy redish-brown with a thin quickly dissipating head. Typical belgian ale aroma, nothing too special - youíve got the sweet malts, dark fruits, cherry, molasses, and caramel. Tastes almost like a dopple bock. Thick and sweet with strong malts, spices, molasses, caramel, brown sugar, chocolate, raisins. Very nice alcohol warmth on the palate and good mouth-feel. Creamy texture and excellent floral hops in the finish. This belgian is delicous and goes down smooth with very little bitterness or sourness.

Bruin met wat rooiige tinten (kers?) en een wit/bruine kop die snel verdwijnt. Smaakt een beetje naar gist, banaan en veel bruine suiker. Koolzuur aardig aanwezig, niet erg storend. Te zoet voor mij. Aldus Huubs. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Poured from a bottle this beer appears a nice dark brown with gentle clouds creamy light with a nice thick head to match. The aroma is malty banana bread with hints of the big ABV. Flavor is peppery sweet with some estery accents following and coating the mouth with some belgian yummies. A fairly full mouthfeel with a balanced amount of fizz. Belgian beers never disappoint.

I opened my bottle of Gulden Draak with some lofty expectations. For one, I paid five-dollars for the damn thing. Two, I love Belgian strong ales anyways. Three, this particular beer was highly recommended (top ten) by a friend of mine. And, four, the totally awesome bottle just had to be an indication of a totally awesome taste. Despite the cost of Gulden Draak, I was very generous, splitting the 11.2 ounces three ways. I was surprised to find that this golden dragon wasnít golden at all, but a deep mahogany. The head was a caramely brown, but I didnít think it was as intense as some other Belgians Iíve had. Upon my first sip, I remained incredulous--a little maltier than expected, a little too much alcohol taste, not as fruity as I wanted. Upon my second sip, I thought it was a little sweeter, with a little more of that chocolate/toffee taste that I just missed on the initial quaff. By the third sip, I realized, "Wow. This is a top fifteen beer." It began to warm up a little and developed the additional oak and wine sensations. I didnít say a damn thing when one of the glasses holding a third of the bottle was handed back to me, and, by the time I had polished everything off, Gulden Draak had moved from a top fifteen to a top ten. This beer is worth the hype and monetary hit, complex and substantial.

Birra dal forte tenore alcolico e decisamente corposa. Dolce, con chiari sentori di maltato e di fruttato. Da bere con assoluta calma.

(Bottle into tulip -- Sampled 2/21/10) Pours a clear dark brown with a small creamy head the stuck around with beautiful lacing through the glass. Nose is heavy with the molasses sweetness of the malts as well as a macerated fruit smell, chiefly of plums, dates, apples, banana, etc. Full bodied in the mouth, as advertised, the carbonation is just right to allow all the fruit notes to pop on the tongue and really develop. As expected with this style, the banana and spice dominate, and the alcohol is very very sneaky. At 10.5% this could be a very good or very bad thing, depending on what you are looking for! Easily one of the best I have tried so far this year.

Bottle. Hazy yellow-brown pour with a thick, off white head. Raisiny aroma with a touch of vanilla. Great dried fruit flavor with sweet malts. Medium body with lively carbonation and a little copper penny at the end.

Draft. Reddish brown in color with a small tan head. Aroma was filled with malt and dark fruits. Taste was much of the same with a nice smooth aftertaste. Overall this was a very enjoyable beer that I will be having again and recommending to friends.

What a beautiful beer in every sense of the word. Smells strongly of alcohol when poured but taste isnít overly present, just warms the throat plesently. Appearance is of a strong, dark beer. Hints of fruit, with a sweet caramel taste that lingers well. Truely an enjoyable beer.

Maybe Iím just in a good mood tonight... I enjoyed this one as well... perhaps it was the thick, honey-ish texture (yes, im using the word texture in a beer rating) and wonderfully floral, sweet caramel and banana flavor with the other typical triple flavors swirling around... hops not really that pronounced, and a malty, yeast flavor dominated... I really liked this one, great on tap and great anywhere... i recommend it... if that means anything to anyone that is.
