Gulden Draak is a high fermentation beer with secondary fermentation. For the secondary fermentation, wine yeast is used. The white bottle, the black banner, the golden dragon and the red letters, constitute a stylish result that has no equal among the many Belgian special beers. Gulden Draak can be drunk as an aperitif or dessert, or whenever you have the time to sit back and relax. But this barley wine is also perfect with and in stews, especially the Ghent variety. It is also a plus in sauces for red meat, such as a bordelaise. It is particularly suited as a dessert beer, especially in combination with dark chocolate.

I had the opportunity to taste this gem in Brugge. It was recommended by a local. Poured thick and dark. Mild aroma, but a thick, hoppy palate with a nice finish. Overall a great brew.

It has a extreme head and a non-overpowering alcohol taste despite its high content. It does not have a full palate of flavors yet the few that it does have such as the slightly sweet suger/syrup taste befit it.

On tap at BXL Cafe East in NYC. Poured a deep, deep amber brown, frothy head that slowly dissipated. Malty, a trifle sweet, hint of dried raisiny delight as it warms, no alcohol burn at all. Light aroma of sweet malt, one of my favorites in this style, the dried fruit flavor not overpowering, not nearly as sweet as I anticipated. Might I dare say, even better than Chimay Blue? All a matter of opinion. . . .

Bottle from Carrefour near Bruges. Appears deep red, nearly black. Has a big white, fast vanishing head. Aromas of malt, caramel, spices and alcohol. Intensive taste of malt, sugar and lots of alcohol, ending with a bitter alcoholic finish, which warms up the belly. Perfect beer for a cold winter night, spices add a decent complexity. I recommend todrink this nearly at room temperature, lots of tastes get noticable while the beer warms up, taste becomes more balanced. Carbonation supports the taste very well, helps tonot make this too heavy.

33cl in a Trappist glass. Pours a dark reddish amber colour with a reasonable head that disappears quite quickly. Very much an after-dinner drink almost barley wine like in richness with caramel and occasionally a hint of liquorice. Very rich and definitely a sipper.

Sweet malty smell. Reminds me of a cider. Tastes sweet and fruity, with a hint of honey. A good tripel but nothing exceptional.

Bottle 24.11.2012 Visual: Pours hazy amber with a tan foamy head. Aroma: Grapes, wine yeast, very sweet (caramel) and spicy. Taste: Winey, very sweet, spicey :-) Full body and medium-high carbonation. Great balance and joy to drink, one of the very best belgian strong ales! The taste is like a dry white wine initially, leading to pleasant sweet maltiness and a round, toasty-hop finish. This is weirdly winey, but really nice all the same. Visual: Aroma: Taste:

Deep brown/red pour with thin white head. Aroma is of yeast, candied sugar and dark fruits. Slightly metallic as well. Flavor is of the same with added cherry/berry tartness. Smooth on the palate with light carbonation. Finish is slightly bitter.
