Gulden Draak is a high fermentation beer with secondary fermentation. For the secondary fermentation, wine yeast is used. The white bottle, the black banner, the golden dragon and the red letters, constitute a stylish result that has no equal among the many Belgian special beers. Gulden Draak can be drunk as an aperitif or dessert, or whenever you have the time to sit back and relax. But this barley wine is also perfect with and in stews, especially the Ghent variety. It is also a plus in sauces for red meat, such as a bordelaise. It is particularly suited as a dessert beer, especially in combination with dark chocolate.

Bottle. Poured with a large, thick, foamy white head and lots of carbonation in the beer. Murky brown in color. Very sweet and fruity aroma. Taste is very similar to the smell with a hint of malts in the finish. Smooth, very fine carbonation like a good champagne.

Aroma is full of malt and alcohol. You can tell it is going to be a full bodied beer. The appearance is very dark as well with some red shades when i look through it. It has a full head after pouring however it is quickly dissolved into a thin layer over the beer. The taste is fairly complex with belgian tripel notes coming through but with a heavy dose of malt and dates or figs, something like that. It is a very enjoyable beer. I drank this before I got into the craft beer scene, and that is probably the reason I still buy it.

A very sweet ale, too sweet for my taste. Thick beer and very yeasty. Was not overly impressed.

330ml bottle. Pours dark amber with a huge off-white head. Aroma of dark fruit, lots of malt, and some molasses. No hops to speak of in this one, but that’s not a bad thing. Taste roughly follows aroma, but there is an odd aftertaste. Excellent brew.

On tap. Dark brown appearance with a sweet aroma with a hint of dark fruit. Although this beer is sweet there is some how a balance and it works for me. One of my favorite Belgium beers. Its dark, strong spicy and the yeast all together make for an outstanding balanced beer.

UPDATED: JUL 5, 2013 Pours dark ruby red with off white two finger head, looks beautifull. Not a lot of aroma on this one except for some hints of yeast and alcohol. Taste is sweet caramel, yeast and bread. Very well balanced.

Bottle. Opaque, hazy dark copper color with a chunky khaki head -- beautiful doily lacing all over the glass. Spicy aroma with a little fig. Almost overpowering taste, extremely thick mouthfeel with some banana, spicy hops, lots of alcohol.

Bottle. Pours dark ruby; lots of visible carbonation creates huge lasting head. Aroma is immediately quite sweet: berries, vanilla. Also bready, banana; alcohol if you look for it. Very sweet on the tongue as well, with dark fruits, candied sugar, a bit spicy. Alcohol is very well hidden. Creamy textured. Slightly sour finish. Highly carbonated. This is an amazingly good Belgian; I wish I had more than the 11 ounces.

My first Gulden Draak was so very odd, it being my first barley wine. It tasted like garbage to be honest. A few days later I tried it again. Then I loved it. Alcohol fumes are prevalent.
