Gulden Draak is a high fermentation beer with secondary fermentation. For the secondary fermentation, wine yeast is used. The white bottle, the black banner, the golden dragon and the red letters, constitute a stylish result that has no equal among the many Belgian special beers. Gulden Draak can be drunk as an aperitif or dessert, or whenever you have the time to sit back and relax. But this barley wine is also perfect with and in stews, especially the Ghent variety. It is also a plus in sauces for red meat, such as a bordelaise. It is particularly suited as a dessert beer, especially in combination with dark chocolate.

I agree with the other review that said the beer does a very nice job of hiding the alcohol. Very smooth and slightly sweet taste. Good foamy head and amber almost reddish color. Would enjoy again.

11.2 oz bottle in the variety pack. When I was pouring it out of the bottle it didnít appear as dark as it now looks in the glass. The head was very thick, off white. Sweet, malty, carmelly, I wish my alergies werenít acting up so I could appreciate this one better. I havenít been that impressed with this label. and it appears this one is the best of the lot.

Trappist glass. Pours deep burgandy brown with a frothy head. Aroma of toffee, raisinsm and yeast. Taste of dark fruits, bananas, and yeast. Full mouthfeel. Excellent beer, although the aftertaste has a slight metallic taste to it.

UPDATED: AUG 8, 2013 Definitely one of the more interesting beer bottles Iíve encountered. No head. A red wine and wheat scent. Medium, creamy texture. A taste akin to red wine as well. Too sweet for my liking. It seemed as though I was drinking alcoholic juice.

On tap. Dark mahogany with cream colored head. Honey aroma and taste. Slightly carbonated on the palate. The high alcohol was apparent at the end of the sip.

UPDATED: DEC 2, 2009 11.2 oz bottle bought in 2001 in SF. It is a slightly hazy orange-brown color wih only a small head. The aroma is pretty strong with a big belgian yeast combined with a huge dark caramel aroma. The flavor has survived quite well, not too much oxidation but we know it tasted a little different at the brewery when we were there in Sept 2000. The alcohol is there still but it has such a nice candi sugar flavor. Delicious beer. Re-rate: Dec 2009: opened the last bottle I have from 2001-not much carbonation left at all but the flavor is pretty intense with raisins, much like a port. Pretty amazing with that much age on it.

Pours clear brown with short-lived beige head. Smells really good, with strong plums, raisins and brown sugar. Taste is a bit dissapointing, alcohol a bit dominant, sweet and light bitter. Medium body and lively carbonation.

Everthing from the nordic artwork on the lable, to the barleywine aromas and flavours are sublime. A truly outstanding brew.
