Gulden Draak is a high fermentation beer with secondary fermentation. For the secondary fermentation, wine yeast is used. The white bottle, the black banner, the golden dragon and the red letters, constitute a stylish result that has no equal among the many Belgian special beers. Gulden Draak can be drunk as an aperitif or dessert, or whenever you have the time to sit back and relax. But this barley wine is also perfect with and in stews, especially the Ghent variety. It is also a plus in sauces for red meat, such as a bordelaise. It is particularly suited as a dessert beer, especially in combination with dark chocolate.

mmmm. mmm good. pours a nice deep brown color, which i didnt expect from a belgian triple. smells sweet and slightly fruity. tastes is very nice and complex. like fruits with toffee and some hops. alcohol is very well hidden, untill you finnish the bottle and start drunkenly calling your ex. good amount of bubbles, easy to drink (maybe a little to easy). very good ale.

This is a heavy 10.5% alcohol by volume ale that has a powerful, sweet nose smelling of toffee, maple syrup and butterscotch. In the pour, this ale will actually produce a pretty good-sized, beige colored and sticky-foamed head. Flavors are as complex as the nose: coffee, toffee, ripe plum, a considerable amount of sweetness and even a touch of sour fruit.

Am I confused? I expected the Piraat and the Draak to be exactly the opposite in color than they really are. The Draak pours a nice mahoghany color with a slightly off white head. It has a wonderful malty aroma, a blend of sweet caramel and nutty Munich malt, and a nice yeast finish, that reminds me more of a lager than a Belgian ale. The taste is similar to the aroma, malty with some bitterness, and surprisingly no sign of that 10.5% it lists on the label. The body is also good as well not dry as one might expect with a strong Belgian. Overall this is an excellent beer that is highly drinkable, especially for a big beer.

Gulden Draak is an interesting bird among the 10%+ superheavyweights of the Belgian beer scene. It tastes more of coffee than toffee--a bit less sweet and more bitter than other beers of its girth. Still, it’s got considerable flavor depth and a deep, varied bouquet. Oh, and the bottle’s great--worth keeping after the tippling.

12 oz Bottle - Pours a dark brown/rubyish color with a good, long-lasting head and mild lacing. Aroma is malt, sweetness, light fruit, and undertones of alcohol. Taste is strong, robust, malty, sweetmess, and slight alcoholic aftertaste. Pretty good brew, but also pricey @ $18 for a four pack.

pours a deep red/chestnut with a tanned head. nice lacing on the glass. aroma is alcohol, coffee, dark fruits and caramel. boom! initially, the alcohol masks a lot of the flavours, but, the taste is deep and rich, there are some dark fruits, liquorice, coffee, metallic and bitter notes. more like a quad than a strong ale, but its very nice all the same. wine yeast definitely adds something different too.

Bottle - Poured a dark ruby red with a fluffy head. Aroma is lots of malt and spices and fruits. You can definitely smell the alcohol. Mouthfeel is very heavy but it's expected from a Belgian ale. Lots of carbonation. Lots of dark malts and fruit favors. Great beer. Will buy again. -optemoz

Enjoyed it but found it to be a little on the sweet side. Alcohol was on the forefront and was almost overwhelming by the bottom of the bottle. Nothing special with regard to color, consistency, or flavor. The opaque white bottle is cool, though.

Starts out sweet like many Belgians. Finishes better than most Belgians. It finished more like a lager.
