Gulden Draak is a high fermentation beer with secondary fermentation. For the secondary fermentation, wine yeast is used. The white bottle, the black banner, the golden dragon and the red letters, constitute a stylish result that has no equal among the many Belgian special beers. Gulden Draak can be drunk as an aperitif or dessert, or whenever you have the time to sit back and relax. But this barley wine is also perfect with and in stews, especially the Ghent variety. It is also a plus in sauces for red meat, such as a bordelaise. It is particularly suited as a dessert beer, especially in combination with dark chocolate.

Excelente cerveja. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle shared by kevinsenn. No head to speak of. Attractive dark brown colour - much darker than expected. Aroma is sugary sweet, with the almost inperceptible hint of red wine, along with caramel and grape. Actually, the more you smell it, the more fermenting grape you get. taste is surprisingly sweet - just about no bitterness. Pleasant palate. Almost like an unfermented wort, really. I cannot believe that it’s 10.5%. An unusual beer, but rather nice.

Overwhelmingly wonderful at first, just plain overwhelming at the finish. Lovely syrupy brown head on a thick, sweet liquid that leaves an almost fiery aftertaste. An ultra-high alchohol content threatens to overpower, but is conquered by the sheer quality of the beer. An uncompromising ale, indeed.

UPDATED: OCT 14, 2006 Cloudy, amber pour. Clingy, lasting head. Very rich, fizzy, and thick mouthfeel. Complex aroma. Flavor is almost all yeast, some fruit, spice, and maybe some wood. Not overly sweet as I was expecting. Alcohol is well disguised and the sweetness comes mostly in the finish. This beer must be sipped.

Pours golden red with tan head. Great aroma and look good in the glass. The flavor was a bit sweeter than I expected, but had plenty of deep flavors such as dark fruits underneath the sugary caramel as well. The sweetness wonderfully hides the high abv. There is no strong rush of alcohol. Overall a delicious beer!

UPDATED: OCT 2, 2008 wonderful mahogany colour, nose is very light but hints at thsweetness. Flavour is sweet nuts with a molasses and a hint of citrus in a sort of rum way. finish is long and determined. I think i have a new favourite brew.

Whoa. A lot in the aroma. Raisins, fruit, chocolate. Like a dessert bread about to go in the oven. As it warms, it really takes on a strong yeast nose. Some toasted toffee. Every inhalation is a little different. Pours dark brown. Held to the light it’s a deep amber/rust. Medium head. Laces well but doesn’t last long. Taste is big malty sweetness. Chocolate and caramel. Raisins. Licorice. Rich, sweet bread. A little herbal with a bit of a brothy overtone. A little alcohol in the finish but that is offset well by both the the sweetness and breadiness. Thick and creamy but not syrupy. Goes down easy. For a big and super sweet beer, this is remarkably light to drink. The alcohol is hidden very well and for all its chewy breadiness it actually fairly light in body. This reminds me more of the quads I’ve had than other tripels.

A dark-red coloured, full bodied, oily beer with a huge, but early disappeared off-white head. The aroma is fruity and also yeasty. The taste is very sweet with notes of dried fruits, grape, raisin, cherry, caramel and chocolate. And the 10,5 % ABV, of course, you feel it but it doesn’t matter.
