COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Gulden Draak is a high fermentation beer with secondary fermentation. For the secondary fermentation, wine yeast is used. The white bottle, the black banner, the golden dragon and the red letters, constitute a stylish result that has no equal among the many Belgian special beers. Gulden Draak can be drunk as an aperitif or dessert, or whenever you have the time to sit back and relax. But this barley wine is also perfect with and in stews, especially the Ghent variety. It is also a plus in sauces for red meat, such as a bordelaise. It is particularly suited as a dessert beer, especially in combination with dark chocolate.

Bottle 27.01.17, stored about 9 months. Aroma of flowers, fruits, caramel, bread and little alcohol. Ruby coloured beer, slightly hazy. Two fingered tan head, reduces to flat with little lacing. Sweet in taste - fruits, caramel, bread. Sour aftertaste of plums, grain, yeast. Low bitterness, very high carbonation, which spoils tasting. Alcohol is strongly perceptible. Full body, thick texture are tiring even for dessert beer. Not bad, but I’ve expected more.

UPDATED: JUN 4, 2008 From a bottle in Reston. I thought this was interesting. Pretty heavy with a very sweet and alcoholic taste. Very effervescent (sp?). If you’re a fan of Belgians you’d definitely like this, if you’re not it probably will underwhelm you. The stuff about this beer being that thick is unfounded, this beer is actually very refreshing in my opinion

Bottle. Pours a clear black, rich brown head. Aroma is very faint sweet. Taste was way too much sugar drowning out the rest of the taste, with the taste of alcohol mixed in. Short finish and also certainly wasn’t ’thick’- thin mouthfeel.

Coca-cola dark brown, filtered, no head. Sweet aroma, complex but not explicitly so. Quite discreet. Some alcohol, but not at all like the pale triples, much more balanced by the malt sweetness. Ends well - suspect some implicit hop action. Thick! Fantastic! Fizzy. I Really like this beer. Not as complex as I had hoped, but Great!

UPDATED: JUN 5, 2011 Bottle poured into a Duvel tulip glass. Great aroma, scents of caramel, chocolate, toffee. 1" pillowy head that melts to a nice thin top. Very dark amber color. Fantastic taste! Highly carbonated. Great balance. Alcohol is quite noticeable. Overall highly recommended beer!

Very spicy aroma, with cappers and citrics mixed with coffee and toasted touches, and soft alcohol. It has a full body with a nice dark caramel color. The head is beige, large and long-lasting.

Nice brew - dark brown/amber pour. very carbonated with large bubble head that disapated pretty quickly. aroma and flavor remind me of a scottish ale but better flavor. very sweet and thick! Hides the ABV very well. Flavor stays with you. Very nice.

Had this one in a Belgian 6 pack sampler. Very F####ing glad I grabbed it. This is one of my favorite ones. Very powerfull smell and flavor. Pours a little darker than most orange/amber color. Very appealing smell. The flavor in this one is top notch, just a great brew.

Mahogany color with huge (3 finger) rocky, tan head. Good lacing. Aroma is winey...sour...carbonation is pronounced. Flavor is sweet...some candy...hint of caramel. Carbonation is a tad distracting. Subtle fruit I can’t pin point...prunes? Finishes clean. Over all, very enjoyable.
