Gulden Draak is a high fermentation beer with secondary fermentation. For the secondary fermentation, wine yeast is used. The white bottle, the black banner, the golden dragon and the red letters, constitute a stylish result that has no equal among the many Belgian special beers. Gulden Draak can be drunk as an aperitif or dessert, or whenever you have the time to sit back and relax. But this barley wine is also perfect with and in stews, especially the Ghent variety. It is also a plus in sauces for red meat, such as a bordelaise. It is particularly suited as a dessert beer, especially in combination with dark chocolate.

I drank this from a 750ml bottle at home. This beer has an extremely complex malt aroma, with hints of caramel and fruit. I notice some spice and yeast aroma as well. I could barely pour this beer, as it desperately tried to foam over the sides. It is very deep brown in color, turning bright ruby when held up to the light, and has a beige foamy head. The flavor is barely balanced with an insignificant hop presence, it begins crisp and finishes very rich. This is a good beer to have as or with desert, or to sit and drink with a friend as it is very rich. Chocolate seems to balance it out. I like it quite a bit.

I didn't take any extra notes when I tried this beer for the first time but I'm gonna try it again and update my comments. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Pours a murky golden-caramel color with a khaki head. Sweet raisin, cherry, metallic, and toffee nose. Moderately thick with microscopically prickly mouthfeel. Flavors are no surprise following the nose.

Pours a moderately clear dark amber body with a moderately large head that settles quickly to a thin layer. Nose is mild with plum, raisin and molasses notes. Taste is quite sweet with a harsh bitterness on the finish. High carbonation and rich, warming palate. Decent belgian but a little too harsh and simple to be among the best.

Aroma is yeasty sweet with dark fruits and toffee. Taste is sweet, brown sugar, ripe plums. This is too sweet for me, but it hides the rather high ABV extremely well.

330ml bottle with 11/09/2014 on the bottle, which if this is the "best before" this is well past it’s prime since it is today 15/11/2015. I guess this guy and it’s 10.5% alcohol got lost in the shuffle for lighter beer whilst colecting dust in the cellar. Pours clear looking like a light bodied red wine with a lovely pale garnet head. On the nose, raisin, port-like notes, and plum. Smells a lot like a Belgian dubbel meets Portuguese Moscatel. Taste wise, sweet with LOTS of dried fruit notes but mostly raisin and dates with some Concorde grape, and ruby port that leads into more sweetness MORE dried fruit, and some faint maltiness/woody notes with black licorice in the finish. It’s a little sweet, but I love the flavour profile. If this beer is indeed past it’s "best before" you sure can’t tell. Good stuff.

UPDATED: NOV 24, 2015 Average frothy head. Off-white. Is lasting with fine lacing. Color is dark amber, hazy. Nice aroma of a bread crust, prunes. Very malty-yeasty. Later dominated by a caramel aroma. Great full body, spicy with soft carbonation. Thick. Slightly alcoholic. Finish is long and bitter-sweet. Nicely warming up your throat. Medium bitter and sweet. It is a very good quality beer. 10.5% ABV well hidden. I can recommend this beer.

Gylden brun klar med fingerhøyt beige skum. Perlende. Lukter alkohol, brunt sukker, brent karamell og mose. Fyldig. Smaker alkohol, brent karamell også i smak, også noe melkesjokolade. Noe oljete.

Bottle, 330ml. Pours dark amber brown with short, foamy, beige colored head. Scent of malt and ripe fruit, some bready notes. Mouth feel is oily to water with medium-light body and medium carbonation. Tastes very sweet but not sticky. Flavors of malt, toffee, light caramel, lightly fruity and gentle hop flavors. Alcohol is not felt. Somewhat boring, one noted. Too sweet. OK as desert beer.

Flaske 0.33 l kjøpt i Praha. Liten beige skumtopp mørk brun. Alkoholstyrken merkes, litt søtlig barleywine aktig øl, sikkert god som dessert.
