COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Gulden Draak is a high fermentation beer with secondary fermentation. For the secondary fermentation, wine yeast is used. The white bottle, the black banner, the golden dragon and the red letters, constitute a stylish result that has no equal among the many Belgian special beers. Gulden Draak can be drunk as an aperitif or dessert, or whenever you have the time to sit back and relax. But this barley wine is also perfect with and in stews, especially the Ghent variety. It is also a plus in sauces for red meat, such as a bordelaise. It is particularly suited as a dessert beer, especially in combination with dark chocolate.

Right after opening the bottle the initial taste was not that great. After a while the taste gets better. Complex taste with alcohol, cough drop, hint of caramel, nuts. Nice dark brown color, liquid is cloudy and sparkling. Minimal head, heavy cloying sweetness, lightly bitter, full body and thick feel. Beer is fizzy with long finish. This beer was not my favorite. Need to try this again later.

Undated 330 ml bottle from a Belgian sampler 6-pack served in a Porter Bar goblet. The beer poured with a moderate size tan head that quickly settles to a lasting but irregular tan top coat with a thick ring. The liquid is a clear near-opaque orange-brown that has a reddish-orange glow when backlit. S - Moderately strong, sweet aroma is primarily fruity, yeasty and malty, with a pronounced raisin note. Very appealing and with little hint of the high ABV. T - Sweet, but with a faint bitterness. I suspect this sweetness helps make the alcohol largely disappear. Rich and complex, with plenty of dark fruit from mid-taste on, and traces of spices including cinnamon. A fine flavor mix that changes with temperature and from the start of a sip to the finish. A tiny bit too much sourness in the finish for my taste, but I know many other aficionados like this effect, and the finish remains a bit sweet nonetheless. M - good, if somewhat high, carbonation helps produce an excellent mouthfeel that is neither too heavy nor too light. Very smooth, Finish is a bit less dry than I’d expect given the ABV. O - an excellent Belgian dark tripel (or BSDA). Good enough to be a reasonable inclusion if you ever get the chance to do a side-by-side taste test of world-class Belgians; I wouldn’t expect it to win, but it wouldn’t be out of place and is usually less expensive (vs., say Chimay, Delirium or Rochefort) in the US.

Heavy beer with wine finish. This beer is great as desert and nice for gold days. Drink it slowly and appreciate the nice dark fruits and wine flavors.

Amber to brown colour, with an off white medium head that leaves a good lace. Smell of spices, dark fruits, chocolate, hints of red wine, candy, prunes. Medium body, I expected some more, Alcohol is there, but does not seem that much. Taste of prunes, banana, dark fruits, chocolate, hints of red wine to. Classic. And cool bottle, label, and cap.

Deep amber-yellow-sepia with 3mm of fine-medium-fine cream-colored head. Aroma is spicy-fruity bread. light clove, bread crust, pear, light grape and berry mix. Body is medium-medium-heavy, syrupy, slightly watery, some brown-surgar-caramel sweetness, raisin, hint of dates, light fusel alcohol that imbues a pleasant heat on the exhale. Medium-light bitterness, slightly sappy. Overall, a surprisingly nice strong ale. Few to no complaints.

Pours a clean, bubbly head. Very dark Amber in color, like mahogany. The beer is great smelling, great looking and makes a good first impression. Taste is clean, strong, and surprisingly sweet. Almost like a sweet Chimay. I wouldn't say this is an "anytime" beer, as you need to have room in your belly and a thirst for a heavy sweet drink. A great beer for the right mood. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

330 ml bottle. After tasting the brewmasters of gulden draak I expected something else then this, but it’s just as good as their brewmaster beer! Expect a dark brown cola coloured beer. Tastes like raisins, chocolate, small bitter, spice and some alcohol heat. Thanks to the alcohol you feel a bit heat in your throat like the breath of the Dragon, great stuff!
