4.5 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
November 2008: I am a little annoyed with myself because this beer has been reviewed out of date, by 20 days. It has been stored in my garage (for at least two years) with about 100 other different beers awaiting its turn to be reviewed. My stash obviously isn’t it the correct order. A weekend will now be devoted to re-organising my supplies.
I am no stanger to this beer but do not own the correct glass, one of my Corsendonk Grand Cru tulip shaped glasses is the nearest I’ve got and was used in this review.
The normal white covered brown 33cl bottle was opened and straight away you know a Belgian beer is in your hand, the rich malty aromas leap out at you. Malt loaf, christmas pudding, creamed plums, all rolled into one huge explosion of the sences.
Deep ruby red in colour with a large off-white foaming head, it looks a picture and that smell just doesn’t go away.
Raisens join the party in the tasteing stakes, they add a new dimension to the flavours already mentioned in the aroma. The alcohol kicks in and the carbonisation is just perfect for taking it into your system at the right speed. Don’t even think about driving if you even smell this beer!

Had a glass as part of a flight at Reverends. Solid, but not worth the extra booze. Bland for a big beer. Not too sweet. Candied banana.

Solid Beer. bell’aspetto, rosso ramato quasi color noce, nera. Scura, schiuma finissima, compattisima e di una perisstenza infinita. Sentori di liquirizia, noce, alcool. In bocca è bella dolce, ma con un forte retrogusto amarognolo che riscalda la bocca. Pace dei sensi.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Bottle: deep, deep brown body with a light-tan head that is super volatile & grows huge, even with a light pour. Aroma contains notes of dark fruits, figs, berries, raisins, & a good helping of bread, biscuit, malty sweetness, & some spices that somewhat remind me of clove... lightly medicinal. Taste includes crispy biscuits, fresh malt, raisins, figs, white pepper, burnt caramel sugars, a hint of anise/licorice. Slight vinous & wine-like character. Decent alcohol warmth throughout with a thick body, yet crisp finish. Mild Candi sugar & spice in the aftertaste, light phenol. Classic Belgian strong.. I’m not in love with it, but it is pretty good.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Aromas of red berries, cherry pie, red wine, and some caramel. Hazy red-bronze with orange highlights and a fully lasting creamy white head. Fruity with a lot of red apple flavor, yeasty, and a little spicy. Medium bodied, great palate-scrubbing carbonation, and finishes very clean leaving behind fresh fruit and hints of spice and mild warmth.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
750ml bottle, thanks to Anthony D. Shared with friends. Totally hazy red amberish color. Airy, bubbly slowly disappearing khaki head, good retention in the end though, with decent lace. Medium to bigger body. More soft carbonation. Some dark fruit. Light caramel malt, some candy sugar, minimal spice. Mostly dark fruit and less caramel, really. Nice creamy thickness to the texture, while the 10.5% alcohol is pretty reasonably well hidden. Sweeter taste, with a light spice, and not much hinting at the alcohol besides a sweeter, bigger body. Nice belgian strong ale. I can see why this is a classic favorite, but not something I’d really want to repeat (neat one to share, though)

Beaucoup de malt, d'épices et d'alcool. Une bière que j'apprécie particulièrement mais avec modération.
