Gulden Draak is a high fermentation beer with secondary fermentation. For the secondary fermentation, wine yeast is used. The white bottle, the black banner, the golden dragon and the red letters, constitute a stylish result that has no equal among the many Belgian special beers. Gulden Draak can be drunk as an aperitif or dessert, or whenever you have the time to sit back and relax. But this barley wine is also perfect with and in stews, especially the Ghent variety. It is also a plus in sauces for red meat, such as a bordelaise. It is particularly suited as a dessert beer, especially in combination with dark chocolate.

11.2 oz bottle to chalice. Pours amber with small off-white head. Bready malt, banana and alcohol. Sweet and warm with a hint of coffee. Smooth and full in the mouth. Good triple.

330mL bottle BB 12/12/15 Pale bronze body, some clarity about, forms a big dense white head that hangs around. Good nose on it; earthy dark candy sugar, nuttiness, hint of dark chocolate with yeasty notes of dark plum, raisin, clove & black pepper. Full body, rich but not overly so for a beer this big. Smooth slightly syrupy texture with creamy carbonation. Palate delivers a good hit of sweetness upfront, with notes of burnt caramel, dark brown sugar, leading onto dark plum & berry esters, slightly porty dried fruit undertones, lingering peppery phenolics with a moderate bitterness and warming booze. Very nice, been meaning to try it (again) for many a year, worth the wait.

Candi sugar, toffee, slightly bitter malt backbone but sweet flavors dominate for the most part. A lot of similarities to their 9000 quad, but the quad is the superior brew. The classic Gulden Draak is still a very good apertif/sipping type of beer, but it comes up short in terms of complexity and richness, and it can be a little harsh in the finish. I’m nitpicking though - it’s a great beer.

Drink cool (10-12°C)Eye: pours a nice reddish-brown colour with big but slowly dissipating beige head. nice carbonation, just right.Nose: berries (red currant, cranberry), caramel and sweets.Mouth: red and black currant, raspberry, ripe banana, brown sugar and caramel malts.Palate: sweet at first, then slightly metallic aftertaste. walnuts, caramel and coffee in the end. Overall: very good beer, nice to look at. downside: alcohol taste and influence.

A dark beer that’s not really bitter, but it is sweet and tastes a bit like caramel. It’s awesome

Overdressed dolled up booze breath morning sugar hangover. Tries to hard to trap me into paying for sexual favours. Probably a great dessert beer with bitter dark chocolate.

Een aangenaam donker bier, wat wel prijzig is. Heeft wat weg van grand prestige, alleen deze is wat minder uitgesproken in smaak. Dronk lekker weg tijdens de film.

large creamy offwhite head. excellent lacing. mostly diminishing. sparkling thick dark reddish-amber body. aroma: moderate malt, caramel, raisin, raspberry, ruby port, brown sugar and light metal. if: moderate sweet. ff: moderate sweet light bitter; long duration. palate: light medium body, watery texture, lively carbonation, metallic heavy alcoholic finish. Dulçor maltado. Alcool fortissimo, sobrepujandooutros sabores.. sabor inicial amadeirado. No final da cerveja sente-se algo de frutas vermelhas no paladar, mas ainda sobrepujado pelo álcool. 95 s

Head is large, frothy and off-white. It diminishes mostly. Body is copper. Aroma contains dark bread, molasses, raosted and toasted malts, pine, lime, grape, plum, apple, pineapple and spices. Flavor is light acidic, then sweet followed by sweet and light bitter and finishing in sweet and bitter. Body is medium to full with creamy texture and soft carbonation. It’s good, but not as good as I remembered it from before.
