COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
(translated by a Scotsman)
Gulpener Sjoes is a colour rich blend from two classic beer styles. It lends a remarkable taste from a harmony from the craft brewed Gulpener Pilsener and the older known Gulpener Oud Bruin. From this remarkable combination comes a unique beer that has been loved for decades in Limburg pubs.

I rate this beer higher than others have for its very unique sweet taste. With the first sip comes a very subtle and gradually powerful sweet honey-like flavor. The flavor gradually subsides as one drinks more of it (likely due to the acids). I recommend taking sips of water to wash the bitter flavor out in between tasting this beer to experience the flavor again and again.

Can’t believe this rates so poorly.
From the bottle into a tulip. Bright, tawny amber, sparsely carbonated and donned by a flabby, creamy off-white lather that left some firm lacing. Aroma of moss rocks, wet grass, topsoil and woody malts. Interesting!! Dry, bready, big toasted and roasted malt palate. Quite peaty, woody, showing a richness of flavour that defies its rather light body. Carbonation is soft, prickly making it quite refreshing. Soft hints of nuts come in as it warms, as does some salt and rust, which actually add depth to its wooded malt palate. This is easy drinking material with a malty twist. Reminiscent of what Scotland’s Belhaven’s ales used to taste like. Quite nice!!! (30cL, BBE 05/06, International Beer Shop, W. Leederville)

Different and good. A great looking with a wonderful beer nose. Upfront very flavorful with a sweet and sour finish. A unique drink, at least I haven’t run into anything like it in the USA.

A beer that caught me off guard. Despite the cheap-looking presentation of the bottle and its fairly average scent, the flavour was surprisingly good. A nice Dutch local beer.

I worked out in the gym for an hour. And than I thought: ’let’s taste that skunk beer Sjoes. I can use the calories now.’ But how surprising and how much I would like to hate this beer ’I like it!’. Sjoes is a tradition from Limburg (Holland) where they mix Pilsener and Oud Bruin and call it Sjoes. I suspected a sweet malt drink but it’s much better. The aroma is caramel/molasses and port. Dark amber colour, off-white rocky head, diminishes fast but nice lacing. Sweet ok, bit sticky, moderate full. Long very sweet sticky finish.

Bottle, IBS Perth BB 2005 Pours a tawny, brassy colour wiht thin white head, aroms is slightly citric and grainy. Flavours are a sweet maltiness up frnt folowed by a vegetative hoppiness in the middle, finish rather tart to sour. Very pleasant, has aged well, whish I had a few more in the cellar

Pale brown in colour. Slightly sweet, malty aroma. Taste is a bit fruity and malty. Very easy to drink and refreshing. This is quite like Palm in many ways but is a tad sweeter, fruitier.

Bottle at fiulijn. Clear orange coloured with a medium sized off-white ehad. Fruity aroma of caramel and rye bread with notes of hops and brewmash. Fruity flavour of caramel, bread and hops. Hoppy finish.
