Gulpener Sjoes is a colour rich blend from two classic beer styles. It lends a remarkable taste from a harmony from the craft brewed Gulpener Pilsener and the older known Gulpener Oud Bruin. From this remarkable combination comes a unique beer that has been loved for decades in Limburg pubs.

The description sounded promising, but it turned out to be a boring pilsner like beer, with just a hint of the oud bruin.

The beer pours out of the bottle in a cloudy brown colour with low head and smooth body. Aroma of cookies and malt. Taste of cake, sugar, malt and barley. Not that nice to drink due to its high sweetness - it is just an annoying beer with which everyone is happy when the glass is empty.

Bottle from the jumbo in Gorinchem. The beer has a clear amber color and a small cream colored head, CO2 is a little low. In the aroma are tones noticable of hops, caramel and some candied fruits. The taste is fresh and full. Also light bitter with tones of malts. The finish is short and has a light bitterness from the hops. Pretty nice, this mixture of Gulpener Oud Bruin and Pilsner, but this is a beer I will forget soon.

30 cl. bottle @ home, bought @ Hogerdijk, Culemborg. Brown with an off-white head. Sweetish malt aroma. Sweet taste with some malts but otherwise pretty thin. Boring and forgettable.

This is one of my least favorite Gulpener beers. Sort of sweet and otherwise nondescript. Malty, watery, with a touch of grassy hops.

Bottle of 300 ml, at home, poured into a tulip glass. Colour is lpale amber with a two finger head, light beige in colour, creamy. Retention of head is average, and activity in the glass is minimal. Aroma is sweet, of malts, very faint. Nothing else that I could trace. Taste is of roasted malts too, maybe som e caramel aftertaste. Slighty metallic. On the body has average thickness, with light carbonation and some dryness on the palate. Overall quite average but it doesn’t disappoint.
