Dark, smooth, rich and moreish, Lord Barker is a true gentleman of the beer world. With a clean, refreshing taste and a hop character that commands respect, it’s an English Stout that needs to be savoured with a degree of etiquette.

500ml bottle from the WIne Cellars, Lutterworth. Good as black with an initially high tan foam lowering to a collar. Aroma has liquorice and blueberry-like sweet fruit beneath ash-flicked Youngs and Cadbury’s. Mouth a mix of ash, rust and warm berries spooned with mocha. Fizzy like Vimto with some of the flavour. Rustic but good.

Cask at the Merchants Inn, Rugby, 16/12/13. Mid black with a moderate tan covering that retains well, decent full glass lacing ensues. Nose is roast malt, light coffee, toffee, earthy cocoa, cardboard. Taste comprises milk chocolate, roast malt, earthy cocoa powder, light mineral bite, dark toffee. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, dry closure. Decent enough cask (dry?) stout.

Bottled 06/11/13. A black beer with a whitish head. A dry and bitter stout. On the thinning side and lacking roast, Nose is slim. A plain albeit drinkable stout.

imdownthepub (11291) - Banbury, Oxfordshire, ENGLAND - JAN 5, 2013
UPDATED: MAY 24, 2014 Cask conditioned at The Turf Tavern, Oxford. Dark brown with ruby hue and slight cream head. Sweetish malty beer, there are hints of chocolate malts, a slight roastiness but more on the mild side of a stout than I would normally look for. Thinnish on the palate. Not quite there for me.
Re Rate at The Lamb & Flag, Oxford. Dry, bitter and fuller on the palate than before. previous mark 3.1 new 3.6 ave 3.4.
