3.5 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle from Merkur Hoher Markt, Vienna. Beatiful appearance: Amber/brown clear body with massive, long-lasting, frothy, beige head with all kinds of differently sized bubbles. Foam leaves a lot of lacing. Wonderful fruit aroma of grapefruit, peach, pine, citrus, litchi and also dark fruits, side by side with a determined caramel, cocoa and malt roastyness. Unfortunately the taste doesn’t really keep what the aroma promises, only light tropical fruit notes, caramel, cocoa and roasted malt. Medium to thin body with a long bitter, roasty and slightly dry, slightly spicy finish. Overall a bit unbalanced. What a pity! As long as you look at it and smell it, this seems like a top class IPA, but the taste doesn’t live up to the aroma and the mouthfeel isn’t satisfying enough. At least it is somehow unique, because of the strong roasted malt presence and still one of the best IPAs from Austria.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle from Marhun, Darmstad, bb 29.04.14
Amber color, dark, hazy, with creamy head. This IPA focuses on the caramel, mellow, rather than the hops; bitter enough, without defined hop traits, although there are some resins; the final is also malty.

2.8 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 12/20
UPDATED: OCT 17, 2013 33cl bottles, Maruhn. Pours a murky rust orange with unstable head. Sweet yeasty nose with shy exotic notes (mango) quickly give way at first taste of apricot compote, acerbated by a soggy maltiness and confused moorish yeast profile. Malt caramel notes and hop spruce rushing to the rescue. Heavy mf has more in common with a filtered Weizen(Bock), Schneider Weisse style, than even with a continental EU IPA. What I’ve tasted from Gusswerk, whom I was intent of liking, so far has been hit-and-miss: boldish concepts, daring ingredients executed in low dosages and often marred by a certain tiredness. Compared to e.g. Hopfenstopfer this is also overpriced.//Rerate X2013: almost like an IRA, with sweet lemonade, "Vienna"? malts and raisin roast. Near mahogani colour. Drinkable, but no IPA for sure.
