Gusswerk Nicobar IPA is inspired by the journeys of Austrian ships sailing from Trieste to the Nicobar Islands. They were carrying a special brew destined for the only Austrian colony in the Indian Ocean, established in the reign of Her Majesty Empress Maria Theresia of Austria. Ingredients: water, organic barley malt, organic hops (Hallertau Tradition, Simcoe, Citra, Cascade), yeast.

(bottle, 33cl) Hazy, copper to deep amber colour with a medium-sized tanned foamy head. Bready toast-malty aroma with caramel, peppery spice and delicately fruity hoppy notes. Bitter-sweet flavour, medium bodied with a calm carbonation. Hearty toasted malt character with notes of bread crusts, caramel on a delicately fruity hoppy background; bitter-sweet toasty malty finish with a rising hops profile towards the aftertaste, containing mildly fruity and spicy notes. Heavily malty IPA, reminding me more of a dark Bock, nevertheless a likeable brew. 20.X.12

Bottled 330ml. -Unclear golden coloured, minimal white head, hops and whiff of caramel in the nose. Sweetish malty, fruity, mild alcohol and touch of caramel with notes of hops and alcohol in the finish. Nothing special here.

33 cl at Merkur Hoher Markt, Vienna.Amber colour with medium head.Stone fruit with some cheese aroma. Malty and burnt caramel body.Dry bitter finish. I was wondering about the story in the commercial deScription but I think is just for marketing purposes.Maria Theresa reigned for 40 years between 1740 and 1780 .The Nicobar islands were colonized by Denmark during that time but never continually due to tropical diseases outbreaks. There was in fact a claim by the Triestiner Ostindischen Handelskompanie in the name of the Austrian-Hungarian empire . And there is an island called Maria Theresa in that archipelago. On July 12th of 1778 they signed a treaty with the natives and colonized the island. The colonizers never received logistical support from the empire including food or water, so I doubt that they were receiving good mighty beer. Still a nice story, though.

Thanks Mladen! Shared with a ton of others. Fresh herbal aroma, slightly sweetish, light honey. OH COME ON. Only light apricot, taste, soft, not aftertaste, so yeah, tasty, creamy, nice fruity note, slightly grainy, but NOT an IPA by all means style wise. Won’t knock it much, but still... Gusswerk does magnificently at getting styles wrong.

(Gusswerk Nicobar India Pale Ale) Bottle 330 ml from a trade with Beerhunter111, thanks! Served into a shaker at home, ABV 6.4% Orange coloured body, clear, with a full finger of thick white head on top. Pretty good retention. Nice fresh aroma of citrus, grapefruit, oranges, tangrine, light caramel malts. Taste of grains, light nuts, oranges, tangerine, very refreshing, light yeast notes. Medium thin body, carbonation on the high side. Quite dry palate. Very good, high drinkability.

Clear golden orange body, medium sized white head, and soapy lacing. Nice florals, grapefruit, orange rind, light tropical juices, and subtle crackery malt. Medium to light bodied with moderate carbonation, lively bitterness, and a clean, semi-dry finish.

0,33l bottle from beerbottle.eu. Again a very decent IPA with all trademarks of this style. I am wondering if the story behind is true. A true Austrian IPA? A nice thought! ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

330 ml bottle bought at Great Food Hall in Pacific Place, Admiralty.

Looks: Transluclent dark amber colour with thin trace of yeast sedimentsThree-quarter finger head and soapy off-white foam which fades in 30 seconds; Excellent sticky lacing with near zero carbonation.

Aroma: Fragrant and sweet amber Ale malt, with strong honey, lychee, light grapefruit, floral, caramel, resin, yeast, light lemon and grass.

Taste: Close to medium sweet light Ale malt, with grapefruits, light molasses, fairly strong resin, very light pine, spices, yeast, strong lemon, fairly strong bitter hops and grass.

Body: Medium body. Thin but sluggish and oozy palate.

Mouth Feel: Ale maltyness is light, close to watery but in a thick and sluggish body. Grapefruit zest and fairly strong resin dominate with light molasses, spices, yeast and lemon. Kinda okay but nah!

Hoppiness: Strong Citra nose as in sweet lychee, strong honey, floral, citrus and resin. Taste is grapefruits, resin ooze, strong lemon and grass. Bitterness is strong for lasting, high astringent grassy finish.

After Taste: Fairly dry. Watery oozy and strong bitter to mouth.

Comments: With all these nice hops, I was expecting a lot from this one, but aside from strong Citra characters, its maltyness is hollow and watery, the strong resin and bitterness couldn’t compensate its lack of IPA’s richness. Drinkable but disappointing.
