COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
A medium sweet still cider. Available in 500ml bottles and on draught.

Golden Valley Cider takes its name from the small corner of Herefordshire where cider has been made in the traditional way for centuries.
Local apples are pressed, and the juice transferred into oak barrels where it is left to mature naturally in the time honoured way.
The Romantic Age of Steam and olde-worlde agriculture may be long gone, but here at least the Golden Taste of Real Cider lives on.

Comments: One of Gwatkin’s smaller efforts I find. Yeasty, but more phenolic than funky and other wise simple cider.

The Golden Valley is a remote and charming corner of Herefordshire that I used to make a point of driving through whenever I was in the Marches. Dark golden cider. Rather evocative ashy, smoky bonfire aroma. Taste less impressive: sweet and rather astringent. Overall not bad, but not as delectable as the valley.

500 ml clear bottle, courtesy of Cardinal pub, Stavanger. ABV is 6%. The label advices me to "pour slowly to avoid disturbing the natural sediment". A rather unnecessary warning, as there is no sign whatsoever of any sediment in the bottle. The cider is clear and has a deep golden to amber colour, and pours very fizzy with a short-lived head. Quite nice aroma of English cider apples, apple vinegar, oak and some spice. The apple flavour is medium sweet with notes of wood and sulphur and a slightly tart finish.

(Bottle 50 cl) Clear, amber golden with no head. Sourish apple aroma. Medium body with almost sherry-like - or should that rather be calvados? - apple notes. In the finish I get the usual peely Gwatkin astringency although to a lesser extent in this one. 130507
