A tribute to ’Spéciale Belge’
We brew this amber beer as a tribute to ’Spéciale Belge’, an authentic Belgian style of beer that has existed since 1900. Our ‘Speciale 1900’ has incidentally been recognised as a Regional Product of Flanders since 2009.

Clear deep orange to amber beer, big creamy beige head, stable, adhesive, leaving a nice lacing in the glass. Aroma: hoppy, bit metallic, malty, hay, grains, green banana peel, little herbal. MF: ok carbon, medium body. Taste: lots of banana, bit of citrus, malty, some caramel, bit of hay, grains. Aftertaste: sweet touch, metallic, banana, lots of caramel, sweet, a bit off, little bitter, cow fodder.

When the elderly Belgian beer genre of ’spéciale belge’ got official recognition from the Flemish government in 2007, Haacht seized the opportunity to launch this new and very typical example of the style. Yellowish white, not very stable head, orangey amber colour, malt sweet profile (caramel, almond) with nutty and doughy middle phase, some mild yeast spiciness and soft florally hopped finish but little bitter. I’d prefer a De Koninck from tap in Antwerp if I need a spéciale belge, but this is okay - though clearly lacking personality, but that is precisely what I had expected from this brewery.

Een biertje met een wat speciale smaak dat niet bij iedereen in de smaak gaat vallen, maar ik vond het lekker

An amber orange beer with a frothy white head. A heady perfumed aroma, floral and fruity. A medium dry mouthfeel. The taste starts off with a tart hoppiness, which brings the ought the floral and fruity elements from the aroma. There is a dry malt flavour later on that introduces a sweeter caramel flavour. The finish is tart and fruity. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Clear light amber with white lacing foam head. Aroma and taste is of good Belgian Ale, just another good Belgian beer. (Brussels 201405)

33cl Bottle in The Green, Brugge on 31st Jan 2014: this isn’t very special to be honest. The bar was advertising this heavily so I got sucked in to have one. Orange to amber body, clear: white head that refused to hang around. Sweet lager like brew in looks, smell and taste: struggled to enjoy it, luckily the company was good and I could palm some off to the wife and friends. Disappointed, bog standard Pilsner/lager with nothing to set it apart from all the rest. Gets an average score throughout because that is what it is, average.

Drunk from 33cl bottle at overijse swimming pool. Fairly bland ale. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
