This brew is a collaboration with two daring brewers. Here we have gone all the way and made a true (gruit) herb ale, there are no hops in this ale, only herbs. A beer based totally on historic brewing traditions, incl. the HaandBryggeriet wild yeast. Contains malted barley, wheat malt, rye malt, yeast and herbs.

Appearance: Hazy amberish color with a fine off white head. Ok lacing.
Aroma: Sour, oak and fruity.
Palate: Medium + body. Moderate sour/acidic and a moderate bitterness. Rich carbonation.
Taste: Mild sour and balanced acidic. Berry fruity, yeast, oak, malty, some spices and a dry texture.
Overall impression: Tasty and complex.

In short: A hard to describe mess.
How: Bottle 500ml, consumed approximately one year after bottling date (no best-before date).
The look: !!MAJOR GUSHER!! After 1/3rd of the bottle escaped the bottle it poured partly cloudy amber-copper body topped by a beige ring of foam.
In long: Very strange aroma, hard to describe, moldy rye bread, fruit pie, cooked vegetables, house plants, cooking spices, a touch of smoke, other… Puzzling aroma to say the least. Taste is borderline gross. Rotting red berries, caramel, plenty of rye, chinese restaurant fish sauce, cooked vegetables, herbs of some kind, fruitcake, cooked ham (!!!), chewing on garden plants, other weird stuff. Heavy thick juicy body with a lifeless carbonation. Both Haandbryggeriet and De Molen are fine breweries but the relatively low ratings for this beer are not surprising, this collaboration beer is atrocious. Not sure what the goal was here, but brewing is like farting, if you try too hard only shit will come out.

Gyllen uklar farve med lyst skum. Lukt av frukt og krydder. Smak av frukt, honning og krydder.

Fin rødbrun farge. Lite skum. Lukt av krydder og karamell. God smak av frukt, krydder med en anelse smak av karamell i ettersmaken.

Bathory (458) - Bryne, NORWAY - FEB 6, 2013
Aroma of jupiner, malts, some unindentified herbs. Good smell. Flavour sharp at first, but then it smoothens up. Love the fruitiness. Mellow palate, medium body and a winous aftertaste. A really enjoyable beer.

(gusher) pours murky dark golden-copper with a small off-white head, little retention, no lacing. smoked cherries, hint of acidity, peppery, some caramel and medium roastiness, slightly boozy. average carbonation, light to medium body, decent grassy-citrusy finish. enjoyed it.

Bottle, january 27st 2013. By coincidense exactly three years on the day since it was brewed according to the label 27/1-10 (ok it’s saturday 26th but just after midnight, normally I’d still count it as 26th but since the calendar has turned to sunday I’ll let it pass as 27th, 3 years is a lot cooler than 2 years and 364 days. Come to think of it last february had 29 days so it would be 2 years and 365 days. Guess I’m covered, this is 3 years on the date any way you look at it) How weird is that, I just picked a random beer from the back of the closet, didn’t see the brew date until after it was opened :) Three years, it may be old, but it’s a lot better now than I remember it being a couple of years ago. Maybe I should have let it turn five? It opened with a gusher, like some Haandbryggeriet bottles did at the time this was made. With that in mind I was prepared and opened it on the balcony. No harm done with a trip dwn memory lane. Pours a clear dark amber, red tint body, quickly vanishing beige head. Quickly as in two seconds. Aroma is sweet, malty, lots of herbs, no surprise there, cloves, red fruits. Nice! If the aroma was sweet, that was nothing compared to the taste. Extreme sweet and sticky, though balanced out by a herbal blend, mint? , berries, wood, and some yeast. I guess the exclusion of hops in this beer make the sweetness stand out a bit. Brewing beer without hops was actually the way it was done here in Norway hundreds of years ago before we sent Leiv Eriksson out on a ship to discover america and he met these crazy hop head indians on the american west coast who convinced us to drop the herbs for hops in our no prefix pale ales. So I think it’s a cool thing to try a commercial brew the old fashioned way, even if it means the beer turns out sweeter than normal. After the taste has settled, a malt bitterness sneaks its way in and adjust the taste to a malty and fruity aftertaste. Pretty cool stuff, I’m not sure how they do that. A nice experience throughout, and with a soon empty glass I kind of regret that I didn’t save the bottle longer as I’m pretty sure it’s no longer availible.Happy birthday, beer, you’ll be finished before you know it.

Keg at Cask. Muddy brown colour, no head. Aroma is ham sandwich, smoke, bit sweet and syrupy. Taste is ham again, smoke, bit sweet. Thick. Obviously weird, and interesting for a bit but a half was too much.

50cl bottle from Bieropholie, cellar temp in a tulip glass. Bottled 12.04.10. MASSIVE GUSHER. Very deep amber copper with a so-so light tan head. Strong, minty, fruity, cola-like, rich and pungent, pleasant enough. Medium+ body, weak effervescence (weakened by gushing?). More rich, sweet maltiness, molasses notes, fruitiness, slightly minty herbals, brown sugar, toast crust; sweet with limited bitterness and a slightly smoky and phenolic rich malt finish

Un liquide brassé le 27 janvier 2010 et embouteillé le 12 avril de la même année. Deux ans. Est-ce une bonne nouvelle? Dès l’ouverture, le liquide explose avec véhémence. Il y en a partout. Une fois l’éruption calmée, le liquide restant est versé dans deux petits verres. Au départ, il y a formation d’une très grosse tête. Toutefois, cette mousse malade et abondante disparaît en un clin d’œil. La couleur de la robe me fait tout de suite penser à une eau sale et brune. Au nez, tout ce que je n’aime pas des «traditionnelles» de Haand s’y retrouve. Cette fameuse levure, ce côté fumé poissonneux et ces herbes non-identifiables. Sur les papilles, les choses ne s’améliorent pas. Je goûte possiblement des herbes qui remplacent les houblons et cela ne me revient pas. Aussi, il y a des notes de cuir, de plastique et des parfums bizarres qui cohabitent drôlement. Je n’aime pas cette combinaison. Bref, entre deux gorgées pénibles d’une bière presque morte, un seul constat de cette finale pleine de champignons et de fleurs : dans mon palmarès 2012 des bières à oublier. P.s : De Molen peut produire de magnifiques bières mais sont-ils capables de bien maîtriser le conditionnement en bouteille?
