COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Aqua Vita Porter is a very special brew, this is a powerful porter that has been aged in old Akevitt barrels for several months. We use this technique to blend the 2 flavours and the process has produced a very special beer. We think the flavour of this beer must be very close to how historic porters tasted in the old days when all beers were kept in oak barrels. This is not a beer for the faint hearted, its rather rustic in flavour and aroma. The barrel ageing comes through very well in this beer, the usual acetic flavour from contact with oxygen in the barrel, the spill over of the Akevitt flavours and of course the wood flavours. All this combined with the darker malts makes it unique. And the aroma is so powerful and interesting it just makes you beg for a sip. 6% alc. ABV, 32 IBU, 112 EBC. Serving temp. 10-12C or 50-55F

500 ml bottle; batch 225 from September 2009; thanks to beerlando for the trade; pours dense black with creamy chocolate head along the edges; big nose of bakers chocolate, dry spices, vanilla cookies and burnt roast; pretty hefty flavor profile with heavy roast, chocolate, light tobacco, spicy rye, oak; silky texture with faint smokiness and spicy booze; lots of roasted malt but does maintain a relatively thin texture; fairly big beer overall, but more complex and well rounded than the standard barrel aged beer; silky, oaky almost red wine feel to it as it warms; roast mixed with sweet spice; a really nice and unique brew

Black with a fizzy white head. Milk chocolate and a spiced liquor aroma. Tastes of chocolate, alcohol, grains of paradise, coffee and oak with a warm alcoholic finish.

500 mL bottle from Green’s Beverages in Atlanta. Pours a dark brown with a tan head. Nose is spice, slight booze, licorice, wood, slight chocolate, and dark fruit. Flavor is similar. I am not sure what Aqua Vita tastes like, but it does some nice things to this porter. Flavor swells with anise, the darkest of chocolate, roast, and dark fruit. Medium to full in body with some lingering spicy licorice and dark fruit.

Bottle, brewed Aug 2008. Black with crimson tints and, by the time I saw it, no head. Very acidic aroma, citrus, plums, lactic acid, chocolate. Wee sour flavor, plums and grapes, chocolate, coffee, wine. Great sour balance. Well burnt malts. Wonderful stuff in great condition.

Pours black with a frothy brown head which fizzes away quickly. Nose is dark chocolate, roasty, aquavit as well once it warmed up a bit and woodsy as well. Flavor is full of roasty malts, caramel, chocolate, dark fruits, slight wood and finishes with a nice bitterness with the roasty flavors still present. Also get slight licorice. Great beer.

UPDATED: AUG 17, 2009 Bottled at PBF. Near black, almost no head. Interesting tast vinous nose. Oaky nose Rodenbach style. Tart and lighter in body than expected. The roastiness from the porter only manifests itself as a slight hint of tar in the finish. Instead this beer is all about oaky tartness with vinegar and wood. Finally Haandbryggeriet makes a beer that is not only interesting on the paper, this is by far the best ever from them!

Black with a small tan head. Aroma of chocolate, berries and wine-like barrel. Slightly tart roasted flavour with strong chocolate, a barrel note again best described as wine-like. Uniqu and very interesting

500 ml bottle # 147, 6% ABV. Very dark brown, almost black body with a thin brown head. Strong aroma of dark malt, dry fruit, lactic, wood and aqua vita. The aroma is the only place I can sense the aqua vita. Flavor is sweet, light roasted malt, dry fruit, soy souse, mild wood, Bret and quite strong acid. For me this is closer to a Rodebach than a porter even if this is something in between. Not as acidic as Rodenback Crand Cru, still way to acidic and funky for a porter. This is good, exiting and fun to taste, but I had to admit I used quite some time to finish a bottle by myself. Thanx to OleR.

Bottle. Low fluffy but lasting off-white head. Absolutely no light coming through this black body. Astonishingly mild coffee cocoa liquorice aroma. Cocoa at the front of the flavor instead of the expected coffee. Followed by mild sweet liquorice. Little hops bitterness though. Sorry mates but to me it is more metal than wood in the flavor. Guess it is actually the aqua vitae that does the trick. Low carbonation. Long aftertaste. Quite different from what I expected. Thanks mates.
