2.8 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 12/20
A bit of a gusher upon opening uncapping. A large beige tower remains atop the dark chesnut pour forever. Tartish, whether voluntarily or not, gently smokey, very nutty, a bit burnt ale with a leafy, iodine touched late palate bearing the softest bitterness for a beer of its magnitude. Going a bit everywhere after its smooth, silky and neat Marris Otter mouth entrance. Brown flavours quickly follow, being pushed around by agressive bubbliness which destroy the winter warmer aspirations. While the carbonation contributes to drying the caramel touches out, the gentle acidity feels a bit out of context without any fruitiness to lie unto. For my money, this was fairly under average for Haandbryggeriet. The uncontrolled carbonation, sludgey bottom and flavors that go in every direction felt a bit chaotic rather than their usual controlled, rational folly.

4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Tasting from April 2014.
At cellar temperature and into a shallow chalice. Deepest, midnight brown and hazy with very fine and sparse carbonation. Small tannish foam off the pour depletes to just a ring on the meniscus. Rolling it around it cedes legs like that of a tawny port. Nose is bountiful, laden with smoke, rich and deep and hinting at Belgian chocolate, charred dark berries, raisins, muscatels, twiggy bark, fresh strapped leather, marzipan and aniseed - ooooooh yeah!
Unabashed dark fruit bitterness in back melds well with the dessert-like folds of chocolate upfront. Strong liquorice and black strap with a little kecap manis and umami, meaty notes. Light, spritzy effervescence on the tip of the tongue, silky and rounded from there on with an oily, heated finish. A touch of ash and smoke lingers long but it is the fruit of this one that is so pronounced. Port-like and vinous as it warms further. This is a long, slow sipper. Absolutely delicious. Another smasher from this brewery!! (50cL, Batch 447, BB 17/02/19, The Liquor Shed, Jandakot)
