3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
50cl bottle from Appellation Wines. Pours hazy orangey with a thin layer of lace. The nose has oranges, apricots and a hint of earthiness. The taste has marmalade, parma violet sweets and then the marmalade returns on the finish. The palate has a medium to large body and big tangy texture and a refreshing finish, despite the big alcohol. Overall nice beer - like the way the hops have come out jammy because of the alcohol levels.

In bottiglia.

0.5 AROMA 1/10 APPEARANCE 1/5 TASTE 1/10 PALATE 1/5 OVERALL 1/20
Dark brown, greasy tan film of a head. Smells like someone has set fire to those sushi packets you get in Tesco. Tart, big soy sauce and a light balsamic tang. Soft lightly cloying. Builds a neat heat towards the finish, actually settles a little when your palate gives up figuring out what’s going on. A fly ended up in the glass before I could finish.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
At just on cool and into a snifter it goes - English IPA after all. Translucent, deep, tawny orange with minimal carbonation and a messy white foam. Wow, deeply herbal and slightly sherryish is the nose but does boast of stewed plums and rhubarb, balckbutt honey and Vietnamese mint, cumquat and ripe figs with a peppery spice underlying it - Huge!! Big bodied, meaty, oily with a smooth, port-like finish. Has a sugar lollie quality to it amongst some massive fruit similar to that of the nose. Tangy and almost sour along the sides of the tongue. Sherryish; showing shades of oxidation at this stage being a vintage. There is ample and lengthy warmth in the swallow with a continuous plummy and vinous aftertaste melded with drabby, damp green herbs. This is a big mouthful of ale. Unashamed to show that alcohol it hits hard with plump sweet and sour fruit. Unsure of what a brewery fresh bottle would taste of, but this is damn good after a few years and a possible story to tell. This could have been a fortified wine. Grand stuff!!! 3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 13/20
Poured from bottle into a chalice glass
Appearance –The beer pours a very hazy reddish orange color with a thick one finger head of white foam. The head, while thick, fades relatively rapidly, leaving just a trace of lace on the sides of the glass.
Smell – The aroma of the beer is heaviest of a citrus hop smell with tons of a grapefruit as well as some aromas of an orange nature. Along with these smells comes some rather off aromas of a more vegetal and herbal smell which bring an overall odd and somewhat off putting aroma to the brew.
Taste – The taste begins just as the nose would have suggested with a decent showing of citrus sweet and hop. A good level of orange and tangerine are present up front with some more bready flavors, which create a rather nice base. A grapefruit hop mix with a little bit of an herbal hop taste are present upfront as well, with these flavors growing more potent as the taste advances. Unfortunately a more vegetal and herbal like off flavor also grow stronger at the same time, and with these flavors taking the taste profile to its end, leave on with a rather off and unappealing flavor to linger on the tongue.
Mouthfeel- The body of the beer is on the thicker and chewier side with a carbonation level that is on the slightly higher side. The feel is really quite nice even with respects to the somewhat off flavors of the brew, creating a very enjoyable and mouth coating feel that somehow baths the tongue in the nice qualities of the brew while diminishing the rather less palatable (vegetal) flavors of the brew.
Overall – A decent double, but with the vegetal qualities of the brew, it is not worth going to on any real occasion. A tryer, but not a keeper or repeater.

UPDATED: OCT 4, 2014 Gift from wife, she insisted I drink it blind (ie she soaked off the label and insisted I rate it before she tell me what I was drinking) What follows is from my notes:
Copper color with white head. Fruity malty aroma. Heavy malt and dried fruit flavors, plenty of booze up front. Spicy bitterness that carries through to the finish. Lots of earthy bitterness lingers. A beer for those of us that like very bitter beer.

"Piney and malty sweet aroma and flavor...more so than I prefer but not bad. Dark and cloudy for the style. I still prefer the west coast or other hop bombs to this. Double IPas are for hop fiends after all, but his is not a bad brew."
