COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
The Haandbryggeriet version of Vuur & Vlam.

Fyr og Flamme is a dry hopped IPA in the US style with an exceptional aroma and hop flavours. We use a very special blend of 3 American hops that produce lots of hop flavours. We produce living beer, not pasteurised or filtered.

Draft at Farmers’ Cabinet. Pours a very dark golden orange/copper color that’s nearly opaque with clear golden orange hues and a frothy two finger soapy off white head. Very good retention, slowly fading into a thick lasting ring. Large chunks and streaks of soapy lacing left behind. Floral hop aroma with a blast of tropical fruit and sweet citrus. Hints of pine and grass, hop oils and pale malt. I’m also picking up pineapple, mango along with lots of grapefruit and orange peel. Pretty impresive for a non American ipa. Medium bodied with a blast of dry piney hops up front that linger throughout over the sweeter notes, pale malt and alcohol heat into a lingering dry finish with a touch of sweetness. Oily and piny but the dryness is countered by a slight sweetness. Not as fruity as the aroma suggested with a grassy, earthy feel and more alcohol heat than expected toward the finish with some warmth in the chest. Pale malt for balance with hints of caramel and nut as well as some biscuit. Smells more complex than it actually tastes with a bit of a one dimensional bitter dry hoppiness up front. Heat hurts drinkability but it’s still pretty good.

Bottle from Mane Liquor. Don’t think this one has travelled too well. Nose is pleasant. Lots of ripe fruits and pine. Rather sweet. Wasn’t a huge fan of what came through in the taste. Toffee malts, over ripe fruits, bitter grape fruit. Would probably be a good beer at the brewery

UPDATED: JUN 26, 2011 Solid IPA. Can tell it has lost a little in it’s journey around the world, but still a decent beer. Nose is lovely balance of toffee and citrus. In the mouth it kicks in quickly with the clean bitterness. this is balanced well with the toffee malts. A bit too alcoholic for my preference, but that may be the additional bottle conditioning this underwent on it’s journey. A well balanced, clean IPA. Imagine this would be super sweet fresh in Norway. Thanks to volcanicbeat for the heads up.

500ml bottle. Pours a hazy mid-copper colour, with a large off-white head which offers excellent retention and lacing. Strong hops dominate the nose, with spicy pine and grapefruit being prominent in the mix. There is a hint of buttered toast playing a supporting role. Powerful, prickling hops come in straight away, offering buckets of lime, grapefruit and pine resin flavour. These are followed by smoother and stronger malt body than most IPAs, with caramel and toffee playing a big role. A hint of sweetish lemon inserts itself briefly, before being supplanted by a resurgent hoppy finish. This is probably the most balanced IPA I have tried to date. Malt is not consigned to a minor role, but is almost as key to the beer as the hops. Unlike most IPAs, I could happily drink several of these. A delightful and delectable beer.

100ml, good amount, served from tap by the one and only OleR himself, Bunker exposition stand at Ølfestival København 2011. Unclear amber body. Lasing white head, dotted spots to the glassware. Fresh aroma of citrus fruits. Fresh in flavour, too, with tropical fruits and mid bitter grapefruits towards the ending. Smooth in the mouth. Very refreshing (Copenhagen, 28.05.2011).

Pours unclear, deep amber with a white, beautiful lasting head. Sweetish aroma with notes of caramel, peach and Arabic fruit bazaar. The taste has lots of malty sweetness and exotic fruit, but also a faint undertone of smoke, which rapidly disappears in the long dry hop bitterness. Soft carbonation, very smooth in the mouth.
