A big scum ring lies on the meniscus in the bottle, the body still hazy even after a long cold storage with a thick yeast pack on the base. Misty, sunny orange body with a mountainous two inches of white atop. Head is cheerfully held proud and weaves a mean lace. Notes of toffee’d fruit, candy, fresh baked white bread, lemon balm and honey swirl amongst spicy, sharp stonefruit on the oflactories. Hoppy, pleasantly raw and spicy on the palate with a rounded bitter stonefruit flavour in back and fleeting pinewood in the finish. Unexpectedly light in body whilst cool it opens up substantially after a few minutes. Sweet toffee brittle and honey notes upfront with a touch of real, old fashioned marmalade. A lemongrass, citrussy zing tickles the sides of the tongue fuelled by moderate carbonation that softens greatly as it heads past the tonsils. Grainy, toasted malt notes keep it level and it melds well with all that is going on. This is a pleasing brew that holds the 6.5% well under wraps. But then again I’m yet to find a Haandbryggeriet brew that wasn’t altogether pleasing. Nice!!! (50cL, BB 01/12/14, The Liquor Shed, Jandakot)

Aroma is Amarillo, Citra, and cascade hops which give off hints of lemon grass, clove, and earthiness. Taste is light sweet malts met with a medium bitter hop profile that finishes smoothly. Light tartiness on finish. Appearance is a gold/orange with slight haziness. The head retains exceptionally well.

50 cl bottle @ home. Pours hazy amber with some sediment and a white head that leaves a little lacing. Aroma and flavour are dusty hops, exotic fruit, flowers, and herbs - with a slightly dry finish.

500ml brown bottle. Batch 709. Quite hazy, golden shade. Creamy white cap. Nose has lemon and orange peel with grapefruit. Flavours of grapefruit hops, fairly clean malts, bit of caramel. Finishes with a long grapefruit note. Seems like it could be a bit brighter, but decent.

50 cL bottle from the Crowfoot Co-op liquor store in Calgary, served in a stem glass. Pours hazy orange-amber with a moderate off-white head that remains and leaves a moderate amount of fine lace. The nose has big orange notes, along with flowers, pine, caramel malts, apricot and tropical fruit. The flavour is very well balanced between a moderate fruity sweetness with caramel on the one hand, and citrus, tropical fruit and soft piney hops on the other. The finish is long, with lingering soft hops. On the palate it is medium-full in body with a smooth, creamy but slightly acidic texture and average carbonation. Overall, an excellent IPA with superb balance and a nice hop complexity. 2014-09-09
