3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Draft. Deep brown body with a frothy, light brown head, lasting. Aroma of chocolate, caramel, spice, clove, nutmeg, basement, earthiness. The flavor is moderately sweet and lightly bitter. It finishes lightly to moderately sweet and moderately bitter. Medium body, velvety texture, lively carbonation. Some oxidation (getting past its prime), but not enough to mask the flavors. Lots of spices, but a nice, rich base.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
a light chocolaty aroma captured within the nose with the appearance of a dark brown ale with a light mocha-colored head. My pour was near the end of the keg so my pour needed a couple of minutes for the head to settle, but that left behind some nice lacing along the glass which disappeared slowly over time. Taking my first sip, I got that chocolate taste that I caught in here nose paired with a bit of coffee. As I passed it over my tongue I left a slight grittiness across the back of my teeth that would be sort of expected with a dark style such as with this beer.
As I am sitting here slowly sipping and typing I am getting another note I didn’t notice initially... A slight smokiness within the beer that was not there at initial pour. Is this coming out as the beer starts to warm a bit? It’s not in the aroma though. Of all a pretty decent beer I would not mind having again, just not from the end of a keg.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
500mL bottle. Batch #498. Total bottles: 2160. A murky mahogany pour with a thick khaki head. The aroma features plenty of cocoa, roasted coffee, grains, dark chocolate, anise, and very light ash. Goes down thin to medium-bodied, yet smooth. Light caramel, cocoa, and roasted coffee start things off taste-wise. Anise and some burnt graininess follows. Earthy. Bitter finish. A moderate amount of warming alcohol.

For a beer of its flavor complexity, a bitter grass flavor stands out and distracts me from what is mostly a good beer. The body strikes me as a bit thin as well. I still kinda’ like the beer, but I prefer Bestefar.

UPDATED: FEB 22, 2014 Old rating rerated 03.01.2014, 0,5l bottle (2012) @ home:
Nice creamy mediumlasting head. Aroma is slightly neutral, dark malts, roasted grain, burnt caramel, grass, chocolate, hay, hints of licorice. Taste is burnt grain, coffee, burnt caramel, ashtray, grass, cocoa, hay, hints of spices. Longlasting bitterness. Boring, just burnt roasted notes all the way. Far away from being as good as it used to be the first two or three years.

2.4 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 9/20
UPDATED: DEC 29, 2013 Pours with some haziness, and is somewhere inbetween a dark cherry red and black, with a big tan head. Aromas are mostly nuts and a sour yeastiness, there’s also some notes similar to cognac/brandy. As well, the beer has a mild smokiness and a slightly earthy finish. The taste is slightly sweet and very bitter. The mouthfeel is sticky and flat. Won’t buy this one next year.

7% bottle from Sugaya, batch 498 shared at Christmas Tasting. Smokey, bacon, chocolate aroma. A dark brown pour with a beige head. Thin-medium body, tastes smokey, roast coffee & a bit chocolatey, sweet & tasty. Easy drinking but thin. Earthy. A fuller body would boost this beers rating.
