2.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20
Bottle. Slight gusher, a very enthusiastic caramel-colored head comes right up to say hello and be hastily introduced to my glass. In it, it settles as a deep brown, near-black body. The massive caramel head stays a long, long time - almost too much beef here if you ask me; I like to actually NOT drink my way through lots of foam before the first sip. Aroma, when I get through to it, is lots of dark malts, yeasty notes, hints of chocolate and coffee. Some semi-caramelized roasty maltiness seems to be dominant. Taste-wise, it appears that the particular "Haandbryggeriet" signature flavor is at work again; Iíve mentioned this before with their dark beers and I donít know where it comes from but I generally donít take too well to it. This time, fortunately, itís fairly well integrated and balanced in the overall brew, which has a kind of "imperial brown ale" profile to it. Soon, as the beer gains temperature, some real disappointments start to show: lots of earth, wet leaves and cellar tones which does not go well with the earlier mentioned HB signature profile. The result is a horribly imbalanced, bitter and earthy aftertaste which really is too much for me. Shame, because it started out so well. Iím not getting this again, but of course (as always) I take into the rating account that a lot of other people apparently LIKE this kind of specialty profiling from Haandbryggeriet. I donít.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Batch 308. Brewed 2010-08-31. Best before 2012-08-31.
Pours very dark, close to black. A huge head forms immediately and I canít pour more than half the bottle before the glass is full. At the bottom of the glass there are many "underwater co2 volcanoes", where tiny bubbles stream out at break-neck speed! The head eventually tries to settle down, but takes its time. The consistency of the head is amazing - thick as a brick! Tilting the glass doesnít disturb it the least! Seriously, itís the thickest foam Iíve ever seen on a beer. I had to use a spoon and dig my way down! I could hold the spoon upside down, and the foam stuck to the spoon!
Ok, letís move on! Thereís more here than foam! Initially the nose is coca cola, fresh hops and pine, then it turns into beautiful caramel and milk chocolate!
Aroma starts out quite hoppy, fresh and fruity, with some grassy notes, then it turns roasty, with earthy notes, and ends in a nutty aftertaste which then turn back into the hoppy goodness from the start! Very nice! Taste is mildly sweet first, and finishes with a good hoppy bitterness. Thereís also that "Haandbryggeriet aroma" which Iím not sure where comes from - the yeast? I taste it in most of their beers (and I really like it). Mouthfeel is nice and thick, and the carbonation is soft. Quite smooth overall. And overall a very good beer, complex yet easy to drink! Haandbryggeriet has been accused of being inconsistent in the quiality of their beers, but one thing is for sure: when they succeed, which they often do, they make some darn fine beer in my opinion!

3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Batch 54, cellared for a year. Dark ruby, huge soapy beige head. Acidic christmas appley aroma, christmas spices, maybe a touch of glue. Roasted malty flavor, spices, dry fruits, strong apple, tangy hops, little roasty chocolate and herbs in the finish. Yeast adds more tangy apple and ash. Quite light palate, with soda like carbonation. Strange but drinkable old ale, and even similar to Julmust actually.
