The old farm breweries of Norway made special beers - dark, hearty, earthy beers like this classic porter - for weddings christenings, funerals or any occasion at all. Haandbryggeriet makes living beer, not pastuerized nor filtered. But re-fermented in the bottle to create a natural carbonation.

Bottle (Batch 527). Head is initially large, frothy, brown, mostly lasting. Body is black (non-opaque, flashlight tested). Aroma is moderately malty (dark chocolate, roasted grain), lightly hoppy (flowers), with light notes of leather, minerals, juniper, blackberry. Flavor is moderately sweet, lightly acidic, lightly bitter. Finish is lightly sweet, lightly acidic, moderately bitter. Medium body, velvety texture, soft/lively carbonation, lightly alcoholic. Delightful nose that’s rather shy, but as with most Haand brews this is probably already quite old and dulled down from its fresh state. No cardboardy oxidation yet though, thankfully. Nice appearance, balance, and mouthfeel, so I certainly drank the whole bottle. It would probably be 4+ if it was fresh, but we’ll never know...

Smoky and savory. Soft malt, fine carbonation, creamy texture. Astringent char and oyster shell and calcium. Semi-sweet approach, medium+ bitterness, drying finish. Cookie batter / chocolate chew malt texture. Brine and salt and earth and wood. Intoxicating aroma. Lengthly finish. Multi-layered. Batch 527.

Flaske 0,5l på Vertshuset Skarven 28 Apr 13 som Sundvollen Porter. Beksvart. Høyt, litt farget skum som varer lenge. Litt lacing. Behagelig kaffearoma. Smaken lakris & tørr sjokolade. Blir veldig tørr etter hvert.

Svart med lavt brunt skum. Denne lukter ristet malt, sødme, kaffe og noe sjokolade. Litt anonym lukt. Smaken er derimot ikke anonym, med tydelig kaffe og ristet malt, men også noe søt. Jeg liker når porterne har litt kaffe å by på, og det har denne! Nesten toppkarakter på smak dette. Søtlig bitter i munnfølelsen, medium/tykk konsistens. Rett og slett god!

A nice porter. A bit too heavy for my taste. But lovely taste and colour. :)

Very dark brown colour, almost black, with a light-brown head that laces the glass well. Strong and quite heavily roasted aroma with much more coffee than chocolate. Also mild notes of sour wood smoke. Light to moderate sweet taste with a moderate bitter long-lasting finish. Also hints of sourness. Strong flavours of dark roasted coffee, gentle wood smoke, hints of fruits and vague spicy traces. Extraordinarily pleasant mouthfeel, the thick and creamy smoothness is elegantly rounded of by a refreshing moderate dryness. Full bodied, soft to moderate carbonation. A lovely beer!
