COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
The old farm breweries of Norway made special beers - dark, hearty, earthy beers like this classic porter - for weddings christenings, funerals or any occasion at all. Haandbryggeriet makes living beer, not pastuerized nor filtered. But re-fermented in the bottle to create a natural carbonation.

50 cl bottle from Vinmonopolet Vika as Sundvolden Porter. No batch nuber on this one. Pours black with a creamy small light brown head. Aroma of coffee, roasted malts and chocolate. Easy to drink porter with light sourness, light bitterness, sticky texture. Good one.

500 mL bottle from the Crowfoot Coop liquor store in Calgary, served in a stem glass. Pours black with a moderate tan head that fades to a thin cover and leaves a moderate amount of fine lace. The nose has has big caramel, toffee and toasted malts, along with dirt and smoke. The flavour is mildly sweet up front with caramel, smoke and earth; it picks up a moderate hoppy bitterness through the middle as the caramel picks up. Smoke is present throughout. The finish is long and roasty with smoke, earth and subtle caramel. On the palate it is medium in body with a milky texture and soft carbonation. Overall, a nice porter with smoke and roasted malts paired with earth and caramel. 2014-09-07

Bouteille de 500ml batch 527, 7,9% alc. Bryg. 10.11.12 best for 10.11.14. Bière noire avec une mousse brune. Un nez rôti avec de chocolat avec une légère acidité. Une bouche de tout en chocolat. La texture est superbe, il y a une amertume de grillé en fin de bouche. Enfin la réconciliation avec cette brasserie.

Totally black colour with medium and quickly diminishing head. Strong aroma of chocolate, roasted malts, hint of smokiness. Nice composition. Taste is medium sweet and low to medium earthy bitterness. Low carbonation. Medium body. Rich, chocolate porter.

Batch 527.

500ml bottle pours almost black in color with a generous beige head that leaves some spotted lacing on the glass. Aroma is dark fruits with some roasted grains and dark chocolate. Taste is a dark pitted fruit and malty sweetness with a light roasted grain and herbal bitterness. A good porter for many different occasions. Recommended.

Bottle: Poured a pitch-black color porter with a large dark brown foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma of dry roasted malt with some strong dry coffee notes is very interesting. Taste is also dominated by dry roasted malt with huge coffee notes which are well balanced and avoid entering into astringency territory. Body is quite full for style with good carbonation and no apparent alcohol. Enjoyable beer with strong roasted/coffee notes.

Pizzeria Paradiso, Alexandria tap ($9): Pours black with a brownish head. Aroma is licorice, roasted malts, chocolate, some coffee, and a tad bit of burnt flavors. Taste is sweet at first, but then gets into a more bitter roasty side. Very nice and complex. Even though this is not too heavy of a beer, it strikes me as a sipper.
