3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20
500ml bottle poured into Schlenkerla pint...! Pours a hazy copper with suspended particles, and with a finger-thick off-white head. Aroma is of juniper berries, medium-light smoke with a nutty malt backbone following right after. Taste has a tad of sweetness to it, medium-light bitterness, and some light tartness. Aftertaste is relatively bitter, as if the smoky aromas were "shifting into bitterness". Body is medium with a slightly slick texture. Carbonation is just a bit over average. Finish is medium. Overall, a pretty unique offering in the realm of "smoked beers". In fact I’m a bit puzzled because I wasn’t expecting that at all...! This is far from being the smokiest of all, and it’s not necessarily a flaw; it’s just that I’m more into "Schlenkerla-ish" Rauchbiers. Still, a very good offering that I would drink again from time to time.

3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Noe overkarbonert eksemplar, men ikke fatalt. Middels smokey, med fine toner av karamell og skinke. Overraskende lettdrikkelig.

4.5 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20
nice smooth roasty note, a round smoke aroma, like a mellow smoked porter. hazy medium amber/dark honey color, with a generous rocky head. the flavor yields a soft smoke note with a mild roastiness. there’s reasonable bitterness that builds in the finish. slightly tangy quality.

4.3 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 19/20
Cloudy red/brown pour with a thick tan head. Really unique aroma, smoked malts mainly. I was surprised to get some of the citrus notes you find from an American IPA. Piney flavors, likely from juniper, along with smoke. Like many beers with smoked malts there is a pleasant lingering smoky aftertaste. A bit too much fizziness makes it somewhat harsh, but the overall mouthfeel is fairly nice.
16 oz bottle labelled Batch 888, $12 (!).

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle from 2010.
Aroma is fairly smokey with nice juniper note but not much malt character. Light sweet caramel note with hints of toffee.
Pours a dark copper with some light brown and ruby highlights. Light tan head of moderate retention but it recedes steadily. No lacing or legs.
Flavor is slightly sweet upfront but then the smoke hits to mellow out the sweetness. Light toffee and caramel notes with hints of raisin and other fruit. Juniper is light and the finish has just a hint of acidity. Light bitterness to help balance the sweetness.
Mouthfeel is medium bodied with medium carbonation. Low astringency an low alcohol warmth.
Overall an alright beer and fairly unique. The smoke and juniper are well balanced but with the age the malt character has kind of faded out. The light acidity is nice an doesn't overwhelms but instead only adds a touch of tartness in the background.
