Once, every farm in Norway was required by law to brew its own ale. All of that ale had a natural smoky taste because the malt was kilned by fire, and most of it was spiced with juniper berries. Norwegian Wood, a recreation of that traditional style, is made by the "Hand Brewery" - four guys brewing in their spare time, on an absurdly small scale.

Bottle at home. Pours a cloudy reddish brown colour with a medium, light beige head. Smokey aroma with smoked meat, wood, leather and forest floor. The flavour is more malty and has a sweet touch. Has a slick and rich mouth feel, and a light bitterness. A fantastic smokey and well-balanced ale.

Pours a cloudy brownish copper with a decent sized off white head that slowly fades. Aroma is smoke, peat, wood, hickory, light juniper berries and mild sweetness. Flavour is hickory, wood, smoke, peat, caramel, mild sweetness and a touch of juniper on the finish. Oh how I love the smoke!

Big frothy beige head over handsome brown amber beer. Aromas offer restrained smoke and dark roast malt and more, complexity in some intensity. Medium bodied and lively on the palate, less sweet than suggested by the nose but with hints of sourness with the herby discreet bitterness. The finish is very refreshing and fairly long-lasting. Every Norwegian farm should still brew something like this.

Draft. Interesting smokey peat aroma with hints of alcohol. Unique beer, really exceptional; smokey flavors, with a slight dry/bitter essence. Very complex with each sip leading to different flavors. Excellent. (from notes)
