COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Once, every farm in Norway was required by law to brew its own ale. All of that ale had a natural smoky taste because the malt was kilned by fire, and most of it was spiced with juniper berries. Norwegian Wood, a recreation of that traditional style, is made by the "Hand Brewery" - four guys brewing in their spare time, on an absurdly small scale.

Bottle. Pours nrealy clear deep reddish amber with a tan head. Taste is highly bitter, medium sweet and lightly sour/acidic. Palate has a medium body, soft to average carbonation, sticky, slightly oily texture. Aroma has malts, smoke, wood, pine resins, and floral notes.

0,5 l pullo @ Ottakringer Brauerei. Samea karamellinruskea. Tuoksussa paahteista mallasta, vähän savua. Maussa jännää pyöreyttä. Paahteista mallasta, ruisleipää, makeutta, limppua. Hväähän tämä on, tuoksusta en vaan tykännyt.

Bottle. Amber colour. Aroma smoke (I suppose that birch), some fruity tones - maybe apricot. Taste is smoky, caramel, fruity. Overcarbonated - this is, for me, the only mínus of this beer - i think this is attenuating the intensity of taste. Otherwise very good beer.

It has a very good aroma of smoke and forest, but the taste is horrible. I had hoped for acidity from juniper, a good deal of smoke and maybe a little bitter dark chocolate to round it all. In the taste there is a little smoke to start with and then its otherwise sour. Not in the wild fermented or brett-like manner and not in a way that I think that its infected, because I believe that it is the brewery’s opinion it should be like this.

Bottle. Pours deep amber, nice white head. In aroma toasted malts, campfire smoke and bacon notes. In taste sweet, malty, smokiness on lower level than in aroma. Medium bodied, medium bitter finish. Very good, nicely smoked beer.

Dark amber and initially ever so slightly hazy, but when poured with all the yeast sediments, it becomes opaque and muddy. Head is light honey in colour, 2 fingers tall and leaves a decent lacing despite not being the most durable. Aroma has a sweetish malty base, but the smoked malts dominate everything with a smoked ham aroma. Hints of bread, juniper berries, wood and smoked prunes also make an appearance. The yeast sedimants add a slightly yeasty aroma in the very end. Taste is bonfire smoke that persists in the aftertaste as well. Initially sweetish, but goes to rather dry in the finish. Bready almost like a Bock. Bitterness is low to medium in strength. Medium bodied, very carbonated. A really satisfying beer. If only your regular Rauchbock tasted and smelled like this, I would be in a smoked beer heaven.

Batch 364. Pours a clear medium amber with distinct garnet notes which, under bright light, approaches red. World class head volume, lacing and retention. Outstanding nose of campfire oak smoke, a hint of bacon and a touch of yeast. Medium bodied with a texture that approaches creamy. Superb carbonation with a nice effervescent burst in the middle and a nice prickly finish. The outstanding flavor profile is intense, but lacks the rich meaty bacon complexity and balance (by being too heavy on the oak smoke) when compared to world class Aecht Schlenkerla. It begins with oak smoke and a bit of juniper bitterness. As these fade in the middle, bacon and caramel take the forefront, but just barely. The finish is a slow fade of smoke and juniper.
