Once, every farm in Norway was required by law to brew its own ale. All of that ale had a natural smoky taste because the malt was kilned by fire, and most of it was spiced with juniper berries. Norwegian Wood, a recreation of that traditional style, is made by the "Hand Brewery" - four guys brewing in their spare time, on an absurdly small scale.

(50 cl bottle) Hazy, brown beer with a creamy yellow(ish) head and some chunky sediment. Aroma is moderately smoky, along with licorice, woo, moss. The juniper berries are present, but less dominant than expected, and seem to bring a more fruity touch to the whole thing. Still makes associate pinewood forests and heathlands. Nearly burnt sugar. Medium bitterness, slightly sweet and sour. Medium bodied, soft to medium carbonation. Almost creamy texture. Overall a good mouthfeel. Well balanced, alcohol well-hidden. Complex enough, but not too exhausting/demanding. Recommended!

500 ml bottle from Les Vignerons (Batch 596 22-04-2013). Light amber/copper, hazy and murky looking, with a big, fluffy, creamy and persistent off white head. Lovely smoke on the nose, not in the ashy/campfire type, but more in the fried bacon/meaty chips kind of smell. Quite a bit of fruitness as well (orange, strawberries), some fruit esters and yeast influence. Mild nuttiness in the background. Interesting taste, sweet toasted malts upfront, light astringency, then just a hint of sourness. Definitely more smoky/meaty in the aftertaste. Average to lively carbonation, light to medium body, slightly oily texture. Not something Iíd drink everyday, but itís definitely pleasent.

Bottle from Sugaya. Smoky nose, with berries, caramel, and a sort of mock alcohol presence from the juniper. Hazy reddish brown, big head which diminishes to 1-cm quickly. Smoke, dryish roast malt, and the strong juniper spicing throughout, which seems ashy and spicy. Medium body, and rather high in carbonation. Tasty stuff. Could use maybe a little more body and even more smoke to blend better with the heavy juniper notes.

Clear dark amber/ruby colour with big but quickly collapsing head. Intensive aroma of caramel fudge and full of peaty and woody note. Quite similar to charcoal. Taste is medium to heavy sweet, low bitter and semi dry (maybe itís effect of juniper?) Low to medium body and medium carbonation. Itís very interesting and unparalleled beer. Definitely worth to try.

Many years ago I had this in a bottle. My first smoked beer ever. The rauch element took a moment to get used to, but I soon acquired a taste for it and have had probably 60 to 70 smoked beers since. So, having said that, I am having this particular brew now for only the second time - now on draft. Khyber Pass. Hazy caramel copper pour. Off-white head. Not much lace. Smoked ham hocks. Charcoal grill. Peat. Leather. Cigarettes. Silky body. Despite the smoke, surprised to find some bright amber fruit underneath - along with some blonde caramel. Yellow plums. Nectarines. Apricot pits. Shiitake mushrooms. Bamboo shoots. Juniper. Peppery finish. More interesting and unique than I expected.

UPDATED: JUL 13, 2014 Sampled on draft at Hou Thou this beer poured a caramel-amber color with an enormous foamy tan head that lingered and left good lacing. The aroma was smoke and bacon. The flavor was tart bread dough, wood, smoke and charcoal. Long tart wood and smoke finish. Medium body. Too smoky for me.

Ordered a 2012 bottle at the porter beer bar in Atlanta -- a muddy copper color with thick lasting head. Aroma is just great. Peaty woody smoke and earth. Everything else in the beer filled suit. Malt and mouthfeel is more of a medium smoked beer which makes you want to crush this, but the arina and flavor force you to savor. I really like this brew.

Aroma: malty, smoked notes. Appearance: nice hazy amber color, huge beige head. Taste: medium bitterness, smoked notes, warming alcohol (is not well-covered), roasted malts and clear notes of juniper. Palate: low body and high carbonation, smoked aftertaste. Overall: Interesting beer with nice hints of juniper.

Growler from Iron Abbey as a bday present. Quickly dissipating head. Hazy dark amber smokey malt nose. Certainly smoke flavor here, cloying dryness. Quite a natural rustic flavor here. I do feel this is a throwback.

500 ml bottle. Pours a hazy, medium amber colour with a medium sized, off-white head. Aroma of smoke, burnt wood and malt. Flavour has notes of roasted malt and caramel leading to a dry, smokey wood finish. Medium body with oily texture and soft carbonation. Nicely done.
